At the Raisina Down Under Dialogue in Canberra, Andrew Shearer, Director-General of National Intelligence, emphasised that technology is the ‘centre of gravity’ when it comes to national power. “It's the main creator of economic power and of military power, and therefore, the country or countries that are able to dominate advanced technology now and in the future are best placed ultimately to come out on top in what I think will be a generational structural contest in the Indo-Pacific and globally,” said DGNI. Mr Shearer was joined by Rajeswari (Raji) Pillai Rajagopalan (ASPI), Mallory Knodel (Social Web Foundation), Anirban Sarma (Observer Research Foundation), and Yuka KOSHINO (越野結花) (IISS), in discussing how technology is driving strategic shifts in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Director-General of National Intelligence, Andrew Shearer: “Concurrent conflicts and other challenges continue to place unprecedented demands on Australia’s National Intelligence Community. Unfortunately, distance does not insulate Australia from strategic developments in the Middle East and Europe. Since I last appeared at Senate Estimates, fighting has continued in Gaza, as well as spreading to southern Lebanon and escalating to direct military strikes and counter-strikes between Iran and Israel. Huthi attacks on shipping are further disrupting fragile supply chains. These developments have serious implications for Australia’s consular and economic interests, as well as our domestic security.” Read DGNI’s Senate Estimates Opening Statement in full here: https://lnkd.in/gQdz3wXV

🐶 At ONI, we appreciate the remarkable influence our furry friends can have on our health and wellbeing. Recently, we were absolutely paws-itively thrilled to welcome the delightful Delta Therapy Dogs, a national non-profit organisation. Their esteemed canine companions—Nike the Border Collie, Mia the Samoyed, Darcy the Jack Russell Terrier-cross, and Yang the poodle —visited our headquarters and whisked our team away from their desks for some much-needed 'paws' for thought. As we observe Mental Health Month this October, it’s an ideal moment to strengthen our connections and reaffirm our commitment to supporting one another. Thank you to Delta Therapy Dogs for the uplifting visit—a truly tail-wagging good time! 🐾❤️ Read more about ONI’s commitment to mental health and wellbeing here: https://lnkd.in/gGFHpkWp #MentalHealthMonth #DeltaTherapyDogs #PawsForThought #Wellbeing

🚀 STEM Careers in Intelligence: Dr Duncan Grove’s Insights 🚀 Think careers in intelligence are all about tuxedos and martinis? Think again! ONI’s Deputy Director-General – Digital and Technology, Dr Duncan Grove revealed the full spectrum of STEM careers offered across the National Intelligence Community (NIC), at the recent Government Scientists Group STEM Expo. From tackling state-sponsored cyber threats to pioneering a Top Secret Cloud, Dr Grove explained how STEM roles are crucial for national security. “There are many different tools in our intelligence toolkit – and it’s not only tuxedos, vodka martinis and jumping out of aeroplanes. Each NIC agency has a unique part to play – and STEM roles are crucial in them all. For example, right now the NIC is collecting and analysing foreign intelligence; capturing and processing imagery and geospatial intelligence to build a picture of the world around us; investigating terrorism, espionage and foreign interference that’s targeting Australian interests; and analysing open source intelligence to make sense of the constant chatter across social media and the internet,” said DDG Grove.
