Thank you, Anna Moran, for sharing about your recent visit to our newest Community Connector Impact Network member site - the Wairarapa community in #NZ! We’re so excited to be working alongside this rural community, guiding them with our evidence-based strategies to strengthen their skilled workforce—not just in healthcare, but across all critical sectors. It’s inspiring to see how the #Wairarapa community is already using its local assets and thinking creatively to meet its service needs. At Attract Connect Stay, we’re proud to support rural communities with Dr Cath Cosgrave's proven, person-centered, place-based, community-engaged solutions to address essential services shortfalls and gaps. Collaboration and shared learning are also key, and we’re honoured to be part of this transformation.
Anyone need a wee? 🤪 And fair warning—don’t read on if you are the polite type. Three years ago, before we moved, six of us (sometimes eight when my folks visited) shared one bathroom. This not only strengthened my pelvic floor but also made us masters of managing, let’s say, urgency with just one toilet (tbh the lemon tree did thrive… 🌳🤦♀️). Now, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with health and social care (I promise, it’ll make sense). Last week, I was in Aotearoa working with a rural community to help shape a community-wide health (workforce) strategy. I was blown away—not just by the wind in the Tararua Ranges—but by how this community used every resource at hand to meet their needs. Some pockets of the community were brilliant at attracting healthcare professionals to their organisation, while others were maximising their existing workforce by encouraging everyone to work to full scope practice and beyond. In fact, the community was so used to intuitively using the assets they had at hand, they *seemed* to lack a sense of urgency that I have seen drive strategy and action in other rural communities. When I evaluated Dr Cath Cosgrave’s pilot ACS programme, a key success mechanism was the community's personal experiences with serious health events due to limited primary care access. But here’s the thing: the evaluation (and research led by Christina Malatzky) also highlighted that many rural communities perceive their health dilemmas as resulting primarily from a lack of GPs. We wrote about this in a recent commentary (see link in comments).. acknowledging that not having enough doctors is definitely problematic... But ...by focusing too much on the absence of GPs, we risk undervaluing or missing other critical roles in the healthcare ecosystem that could also help. This not only limits our options but can also stifle the kind of innovative, community-driven solutions that I witnessed in Aotearoa. It’s like being obsessed with getting another toilet while ignoring the fact that some of us are perfectly capable of timing our visits or finding creative ways to avoid to the queue 🌳. The varied approaches used by the rural community in Aotearoa show that when we look beyond traditional models of care and embrace the diverse skills within the broader workforce (and community), we can create more sustainable and effective healthcare solutions. Now, don't get me wrong. This doesn't mean they are all sorted. They still need health professionals etc. But the prevailing message from the community forums was a thirst for collaboration & shared learning (which we all know is almost more challenging than training more doctors)... so in the end I believe their strategy will need to look more like the V4i movement than a workforce plan. The takeaway? Sometimes, even when you’re handling things well, it’s worth asking if there’s a better way—even if that means coming together to plant a few more lemon trees 😜
