AFPA is the peak national industry body representing the resources, processing, and pulp, paper and bioproduct industries covering the forest products value chain. AFPA represents all elements of the value chain from the sustainable harvesting of plantations and multiple use natural forest resource including forest establishment and management, harvesting and haulage, processing of timber resources and manufacture of pulp, paper and bioproducts. AFPA’s membership falls under four chambers (Growers, Hardwood Processing, Softwood Manufacturing, and Pulp, Paper and Bioproducts) representing the core business of organisations at different points in the value chain.

Guests at this week's AFPA Members Dinner in Canberra had the pleasure of hearing from Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, The Hon. Julie Collins MP who reiterated the Government's support for the forest products sector. Thank you to everyone who attended as we look forward to an important Federal Election year in 2025!
A special thanks to the Parliamentary Friends of Forestry, Timber & Paper Products for again showing tremendous support to our sector - with a celebratory function at Parliament House this week! A big shout out to the group's co-convenors Senator Raff Ciccone and Senator Jonno Duniam for fostering the continued bipartisan support for forest industries in the Federal Parliament. We recognise all of the MPs and Senators who are passionate and proudly support us!

Sadly comments are now closed on the article I’ve pasted below because I’ve just received confirmation that the photos used are not accurately labelled and bear little to no relation to the story they accompany. But let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good story Nine Entertainment and Caitlin Fitzsimmons. One photo is of a clearfell / salvage operation of a pine plantation damaged in the 2020 fires, while another photo is of a hardwood plantation which was also impacted by fire. Both have since been replanted. Nor did the article mention the excellent survey outcomes that show our wildlife is not only surviving but thriving in our sustainably harvested native forests. Survey work done to aid the establishment of the Great Koala National Park which is now being peer reviewed but seems to confirm earlier work undertaken by Brad Law. Proof that you certainly cannot believe everything you read…. And certainly worthy of a complaint to the Australian Press Council. https://lnkd.in/gqYc9gx6

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's recent timber testing trial on the origins of imported timber and fibre products found around a quarter of samples didn't match what they purported to be! This is a massive issue for international sustainability. It vindicates the Albanese Government's strengthening of illegal logging laws and demonstrates the need for reforms including country of origin labelling. Australian Forest Products Association CEO Diana Hallam - "We want a very strong compliance and enforcement regime and we want country of origin labelling so that Australians can go into their local … hardware store, select some timber, and have confidence in where it has come from." This week AFPA team members are collaborating at the annual meeting of the minds - Forestry Australia Symposium in Ballarat! The 2024 theme is 'healthy and resilient forests for the future'. MONA co-owner Kirsha Kaechele (pictured below with Paco (Francisco) Tovar, Andrew White & Dominic Lane) spoke authoritatively on day one about the importance of diplomacy in forest management and the need for a broad conversation.
