🎉 Huge, monumental and enormous congratulations to the ATS's fabulous Shenyan Y, who won our 2024 David Sugden Award 🎉 Shenyan, a senior geotechnical engineer at AECOM and a dedicated member of the ATS Young Members Committee, won the award for her paper titled: ***Evaluating Tunnel Junction Behaviour: A comparative study of 3D and 2D equivalent span analyses*** Our judging panel was very impressed with the paper commenting that it was "concise, well-written and logical", that it was "thoughtfully put together" and had a "great abstract and summary." ATS Young Members Chair, Philip Chin Fung Tsang, presented the award to Shenyan at the recent St Barbara's Day Dinner and Celebration in Brisbane. The ATS runs the annual David Sugden Award to encourage young engineers to develop the art of technical writing. In 2024, the award celebrated its 20th anniversary. In addition to the glory of joining the ranks of other esteemed winners that include Anmol Bedi, Ritesh Mahajan, Mahdi Zoorabadi, David Oliveira, Jurij Karlovšek, Senthilnath G T, Harry Buchanan and Ivan Haryono, (many of whom continue their fantastic careers in the tunnelling industry in Australia and overseas), Shenyan wins $5000 to help her travel to and attend WTC2025 in Sweden. Her paper will also be published, in full, on our website and in our ANZ Journal, April 2025. Congratulations again Shenyan and thanks so much for your service to the ATS! Our volunteer-led organisation thrives because of people like you 🤩

"K'ching! K'ching! K'ching!" - the sound of a coin-sorting machine for a risk-based tunnelling impact assessment. Use it well, and we'll accurately narrow down from a list of 1000 assets to a handful of critical ones. I had a fantastic time presenting at the ATS Short Course 2024. Thank you David Oliveira for inviting me to present, Harry Asche & Geoffrey Chan for your kind encouragement, Alberto Dias & Ben Williams for supporting this. I was thrilled to hear how much everyone enjoyed the #coinsorting analogy! The credit for this clever idea goes to a brilliant delivery manager I worked with on Western Harbour Tunnel. One day, while prodding me to refine the design program of 15 tunnelling packages, Edmund A. said to me “Your delivery methodology sounds like filtering and categorizing coins? We highlight the risky ones and work through solutions with our #Acciona & #TfNSW team”—and the rest is history. It’s always amazing to see how a simple yet relatable concept can resonate with others and make technical topics more accessible. Thank you everyone for the positive feedback on my first public speaking stint, and I look forward to more opportunities to share insights and ideas! I myself enjoyed the fun Mt Coot-tha Quarry visit organised by Annalena Chapman and was excited to hear from Neil Cunnington that Worldsensing & Trimble Geospatial has upgraded their wireless battery-operated laser-tilt sensors (GNSS) with a new absolute movement measurement capability. Powered with #AI loadsensing smart technology, the units talk to each other and make total station surveying / convergence monitoring in #tunnels safer and less labour-intensive. They don't depend on cloud post-processing software too! Looking forward to seeing them being utilised on critical assets! #Tunneling #GeotechnicalEngineering #ImpactAssessment #ATS2024 #Aecom #WeDeliverABetterWorld Australian Tunnelling Society P/s A small trivia : a bag of gold chocolate coins to the first person who can spot what's wrong with the coin sorting machine in the picture below.
