At the Australia India Business Council, we are thrilled to witness the strengthening of ties between Australia and Karnataka, as highlighted during the Invest Karnataka 2025 Global Investors Meet. An expert panel gathered to discuss Australia's and India's ambition to accelerate bilateral trade, with Karnataka playing a pivotal role - including developing a reputation as a skills and education hub. Vik Singh, Australia's Trade and Investment Commissioner for South Asia, emphasized Bengaluru's vibrant ecosystem and its appeal to students choosing Australia as their preferred study destination. He highlighted the National Education Policy's goal of achieving a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio, necessitating the establishment of 14 new universities per week, and the crucial role of transnational educational partnerships in meeting this demand. AIBC's National Associate Chair and NSW President, Irfan Malik (MAICD) underscored the significance of the 2022 trade agreement between two nations saying what Australia needs, India has got and vice versa. This partnership leverages mutual strengths, such as Australia's critical minerals essential for India's semiconductor manufacturing industry. Collaborations are also flourishing in sectors like defence, space technology, skilling, and education, with Karnataka offering substantial contributions. A full house at Australia India Business Council’s Roundtable Discussion on “Strengthening the Queensland-India Agriculture Partnership” held on Friday in Brisbane. Government, peak industry and agriculture bodies and businesses from both Australia and India were present in the room to explore ideas for collaboration. Thank you to our event partners – the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) in New Delhi and Brisbane, who led the team from India, the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) and Trade and Investment Queensland. Our Roundtable was on the sidelines of AgriFutures evokeAG, Australia’s flagship agtech conference in Brisbane, which saw a delegation of select Indian businesses travelling to Australia. Specific opportunities emerging out of the Roundtable: - Queensland to evaluate cultivation of pigeon pea (toor or arhar dal) and millets for the high potential Indian market - For agtech companies, finding synergies between the two countries, given the massive difference in size of landholdings in India and feasibility of specific technologies with the smaller farmers in India - Explore working with India’s Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) as possible channels to leverage Australia’s agtech expertise.  - Leverage India’s strong data and technology capabilities and high-quality Indian manufacturing to support agtech companies in Australia. - Need to co-opt university research institutions in the partnership to engage closely and examine support from international development institutions to sustain investments in research. The Australia-India agricultural partnership got a shot in the arm with AIECTA in 2022 as tariffs were reduced on a range of products, also providing a fillip to the broader relationship which seeks to enhance university-led research collaborations and agtech partnerships. The event was attended by India-based senior SBI executives, Niraj Kumar Panda and Jagat Kant Choudhary CAMS, CFCS, and featured discussions on SBI's role in the growing Australia-India bilateral trade. Irfan Malik (MAICD), AIBC Associate Chair and NSW President, welcomed SBI executives, AIBC members and guests. Ganesh Radhakrishnan, CEO SBI Australia, outlined the bank’s Australian operations and strategies to attract Australian investment in India, including expanding services to Australian regional areas. Dr Janakiraman Sarvesvaran, Consul General of India in Sydney, outlined opportunities for SBI on how the bank could assist Australian businesses with banking, trading, and remittances and Tim Thomas, CEO Centre for Australia-India Relations, emphasized the strong momentum in the Australia-India trade relations and outlined future opportunities in digital trade, the knowledge economy, Agritech, startups, and investments. Narasimhan Viswanathan, AIBC Make with India Chapter Lead addressed industry opportunities and supply chain challenges. Dianne Tipping, Export Council of Australia Chair and Poornima Menon, AIBC NSW Vice President, discussed opportunities in regional Australia and the Startup sector.
