The Australian Academy of the Humanities congratulates renowned biochemist Professor Ute Roessner AM FAA, who has been appointed as the new Australian Research Council CEO. Professor Roessner has served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Initiatives and Infrastructure) at the Australian National University. She will take up the position on 31 March 2025. “We warmly congratulate Professor Roessner on her appointment,” said AAH President Professor Stephen Garton AM FAHA FRAHS FASSA FRSN. “As the new CEO, we look forward to supporting Professor Roessner to achieve the ARC’s reform agenda brought about by the ARC review and appointment of the independent Board." “The ARC is the major source of competitive funding for humanities research in Australia and has a critical role funding research for national benefit. The Academy was established by Royal Charter in 1969, and is one of Australia’s four Learned Academies. We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a Fellowship of over 600 leaders and experts in culture, history, languages, linguistics, philosophy and ethics, archaeology and heritage. We provide independent and authoritative advice, including to government, to ensure ethical, historical and cultural perspectives inform discussions regarding Australia’s future challenges and opportunities. We also promote and recognise excellence in the humanities disciplines. The Academy plays a unique role in promoting international engagement and research collaboration and investing in the next generation of humanities researchers.

We are excited to share the release of the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) and the Australian Academy of the Humanities' latest report, Mapping Australia’s Indonesia Research Capability. This pivotal report spotlighting Australia and Indonesia’s dynamic research partnership, provides a comprehensive overview of existing bilateral research ties and identifies key opportunities to advance our shared knowledge. Focusing on collaborative strengths in society and culture, health and medicine, and energy, the findings reflect both successes and challenges in building impactful, mutual research initiatives. Key insights include: ✨ A substantial increase in co-authored publications, with 8,500 co-authored works in the past decade, highlighting the growth and significance of Australia-Indonesia collaborations. ✨ Australia’s standing as Indonesia’s fourth research partner and its position as a global leader in producing research focused on Indonesia. Big news at Australian Book Review: after benefitting from Peter Rose's outstanding leadership for more than twenty years, the magazine is now looking for its next Editor & CEO. This is a brilliant opportunity for those who love this jewel of Australian literature and want to shape its future. The Editor and CEO will lead a small, expert team, building on the magazine’s clear strengths in book reviews, political commentary, arts reviews, literary prizes, and cultural philanthropy. The successful candidate will be a successful arts leader and/or publishing professional with an ambitious editorial vision and a deep knowledge of Australian literature, society, and the arts, and a strong appreciation of ABR’s unique place in Australian literary culture. Prior management and financial experience is essential, and experience with cultural philanthropy and/or grant applications and arts funding are desirable. The Editor and CEO will be expected to lead all aspects of this small and vibrant organisation. The Editor and CEO reports to myself as Chair.
