Liberal and Labor are working together to keep minor parties out. They do so by introducing electoral laws they themselves are exempt from. "In his timidity, Albanese has introduced to politics the each-way bet. Strong support for the move to renewables? Of course. Continuing support for the use and export of fossil fuels? Of course. Welcome to the era of gutless government." #auspol https://lnkd.in/gJZwY7F9

We were one of the 15,000 submissions made to the inquiry on the social media ban legislation. As well as giving only 24 hours to respond, submissions were limited to 2 pages in length. Here's ours: https://lnkd.in/g64XrJBK #auspol

Statement following the US election: Reflections on our own democracy, as Australians and as a party. With the US election all but decided, it is timely that we affirm our commitment to the democratic process and the rule of law. A healthy democracy cannot be taken for granted. It relies on its citizens accepting the majority decision and agreeing to be organised under that majority decision. Our elected representatives are required to exercise good governance for the betterment of all, openly and honestly. Australia’s democratic system, like America’s, has its flaws. Our democracy does not always make the best decisions and we are often disappointed and disagree with those decisions. However, it remains the best form of government to provide a good standard of living for most. Democracy can be vulnerable to corruption by manipulating the will of the people. It is for this reason that parliamentary business must occur with openness and transparency. The Australian Democrats believe that Australia’s democracy is worth protecting, and at its best, provides for all its citizens. We build policy and platforms on the best information available, not party dogma. We strive for integrity in politics, good governance through consensus (not division) and to be part of a society that values and benefits all its citizens. We promise that our position on the important issues, such as housing, education, and health, will be determined by what provides the best outcome for all Australians. We also recognise the vulnerabilities within our democratic system, and we promise to hold parliament to the highest possible standards of honesty and integrity. Finally, if you disagree with the decisions being made on your behalf, become involved in the democratic process. The diversity of inputs from many engaged and informed voters will result in a better standard of living for all Australians.

We're told that Elana had to re-write this podcast episode 4 times because the government wouldn't stop shooting itself in the foot. A bonus discussion on the Census debacle, and why representation in the national snapshot matters. #auspol #Census2026 https://lnkd.in/gz-Hh5hn

Criminalising climate action protests won't stop the planet burning, but it certainly reveals the level of state capture in this country... #auspol #ClimateActionNow https://lnkd.in/g36JeNHf

Genuinely astonishing that in walking back their bizarre decision to exclude questions on LGBTQIA+ people from the census, the government has somehow managed to make the entire situation worse. https://lnkd.in/g3hb7sXQ Show your support for queer Australians by signing the Equality Australia petition to have the LGBTQIA+community included in the census fully: https://lnkd.in/gQzjuYYj #auspol #Census2026au #CountUsIn

There IS no argument left to have. The energy transition is a simple fact. "Whereas nuclear power is barely growing, and is shrinking as a proportion of global power output, The Economist reported solar power was growing so quickly it was set to become the biggest source of electricity on the planet by the mid-2030s. By the 2040s — within this next generation — it could be the world's largest source of energy of any kind, overtaking fossil fuels like coal and oil." https://lnkd.in/dysQNht6
