AEMO has spent months planning and preparing with industry and governments to navigate potential reliability risks to Australia’s main power systems this summer. AEMO’s preparation includes providing forecasts and briefings of the upcoming summer covering weather and system readiness and how to maximise generation and network availability over expected high demand periods. As part of this, AEMO undertakes extensive planning to ensure there is adequate supply to meet anticipated demand including tendering for additional off-market generation and demand side response capacity. As WA transitions to net zero, natural gas continues to play a critical role in providing energy to homes and businesses. In our final episode of AEMO On Air for 2024, we chat with AEMO’s Nicola Falcon, Interim Executive General Manager of WA, about the latest WA Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO) which reveals a strengthened near-term outlook compared to last year’s GSOO, with WA’s domestic gas supply expected to exceed consumption through to 2027. 🎧 Available now on all your favourite podcast platforms. AEMO has released our 2024 WA Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO), which reveals a strengthened near-term outlook for Western Australia’s domestic gas supply. Key trends: - Domestic gas supply is forecast to exceed consumption through to 2027. - Higher supply driven by increased flow from existing facilities and advanced new projects, combined with reduced demand from suspended mining and refinery operations. - A supply gap cold materialise in 2028 if projects are unable to be accelerated to match consumption, or consumption is greater than forecast. - From 2030, new projects will be required to support domestic gas consumption as reserves in existing fields decline. Gas remains vital for WA’s energy transition, supporting the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) as it integrates more renewables and decarbonises. 📊 Learn more about the outlook and challenges ahead: Report: https://bit.ly/4fr2HnQ Media Release: https://bit.ly/3OYHB5J

Power systems around the world are operated with a certain level of reserve energy to assist with maintaining power system reliability for consumers during challenging conditions, often extreme high demand periods during summer. When this happens, AEMO will notify the market of ‘Lack of Reserve’ (LOR) conditions to encourage more capacity to assist in meeting electricity demand. Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gMg6685f

AEMO has released our Draft 2025 Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report (IASR) for stakeholder feedback and consultation. Every two years, AEMO is required by the National Electricity Rules (NER) to consult and produce the IASR, which includes future energy scenarios that inform AEMO’s forecasting and planning analysis and publications, such as the Integrated System Plan (ISP). This report outlines: ✔️ Scenarios: AEMO is continuing with three key scenarios that explore the investment needs considering various underlying uncertainties in the energy transition. This includes two variations of the most ambitious energy transition scenario. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on which variant should be used for ISP planning. ✔️ Key inputs & assumptions: The report outlines policy inputs and key assumptions and/or forecasts on the key drivers of consumer’s energy consumption, consumer energy resources, generation options and their technical parameters, renewable energy zones, and more. ✔️ Next steps: Feedback on this Draft 2025 IASR is critical to the planning process. To give stakeholders greater opportunity to engage on these key settings, AEMO is releasing the report’s critical inputs in two stages, with a second release coming in February 2025. Engagement opportunities: AEMO invites stakeholders to actively participate in the consultation process and stay updated on opportunities via the Opportunities for Engagement web page https://lnkd.in/giHMguq9. This process is pivotal for shaping the future energy landscape and will inform several critical reports including the 2026 ISP.
