Congratulations to Newcastle Herald reporter Matthew Kelly on winning the Community and Regional Affairs category at this year's prestigious Walkley Awards. Now in it's 69th year, The Walkley Awards celebrate excellence in Australian journalism. Matthew won for his powerful series of stories that helped reunite a homeless man with his family after 30 years of living on the streets of Newcastle. It is a brilliant example of the power of regional journalism to bring about real change. Newcastle Herald editor Lisa Allan said, “Matthew’s story embodies the very essence of journalism—shining a light on the unseen and giving a voice to the voiceless." Congratulations to our 10 trainee journalists who published the latest in our Young and Regional series: "The Algorithm Decides". As they start their careers amidst disruption of social media and AI, it is apt this series unpicks the impact of social media on young people - teenagers talking about beauty trends, radicalisation, their exposure to explicit content, toxic masculinity, AI, gambling and misinformation.
