MEDIA RELEASE 9 December 2024 State’s First Augmented Reality Training Immersive Skills Lab to Launch Work on Tasmania’s first Immersive Skills Lab is underway, with a soft launch planned for December to share how the lab will provide augmented reality training in industry safety programs. The lab is a partnership between Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone (BBAMZ) and TasTAFE, with $250,000 funding provided by Skills Tasmania and additional financial support from Abel Energy, Timberlink, Bell Bay Aluminium, APA Group and Liberty Bell Bay. Tasmanian Minister for Skills and Training Felix Ellis MP will be at the Immersive Skills Lab launch to see how the lab will work once fitted out, BBAMZ chief executive officer Susie Bower said. “We’re expecting the fit-out for the Immersive Skills Lab to be completed in February, which will be great timing for jobseekers looking to extend their skills in the New Year,” she said. “We already have agreements within our industry and with Welcome Cultural Services to provide basic safety and skills training in the lab, such as white card, safety, working at heights, working in confined spaces and forklift driving, tailored specifically for Tasmanian industry needs. “The benefit of the Immersive Skills Lab is that it is a risk-free environment. People can engage with the training and hone their skills virtually before they enter an active site. It is the first lab of its kind here, and we’re very excited to see how Tasmanians can use it to develop valuable skills that will help them succeed in their chosen career,” Ms Bower said. • Media Release: Hydrogen at Bell Bay: A Catalyst for Tasmania’s Clean Energy Future Friday, August 30, 2024 BBAMZ CEO Susie Bower highlighted the development of a hydrogen industry at Bell Bay as a pivotal opportunity for Tasmania to contribute to the global fight against climate change, while simultaneously driving economic growth and job creation across the state. "Bell Bay's strategic location, coupled with Tasmania's unparalleled access to renewable energy, positions it as an ideal site for hydrogen production," said Ms. Bower. "By harnessing our clean energy resources, we can produce green hydrogen to power industries, reduce emissions, and support our transition to a low-carbon economy." Abel Energy is making significant progress with their hydrogen project, and other major proponents are seriously considering Bell Bay for their ventures. The Abel project alone is expected to create over 500 jobs. Additionally, numerous projects focused on both onshore and offshore wind energy are in various stages of development, further strengthening Tasmania's renewable energy landscape. The Tasmanian Government has been proactive in supporting the hydrogen industry, making significant investments in infrastructure and forming strategic partnerships with industry leaders. The development of a hydrogen hub at Bell Bay, which was announced by the Federal Labor Government, is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to Tasmania, creating hundreds of ongoing employment opportunities as the industry expands. This initiative aligns perfectly with the vision of a sustainable, resilient, and prosperous Tasmania, driven by innovation and clean energy. "BBAMZ is dedicated to ensuring that Tasmania remains at the forefront of renewable energy development," Ms. Bower continued. "The hydrogen industry at Bell Bay will be instrumental in achieving our renewable energy targets and will deliver long-term benefits to our economy and communities."

  • Thanks to Behrooz, Martin and Mark at the Australian Maritime College for showing our team the Hydrogen simulator and its possibilities. We look forward to future engagement and partnership opportunities.
