Our Head of Sustainability and Innovation Dr Ali Nezhad spoke at the Infrastructure Sustainability Council Connect 2024 conference, held recently in Sydney. As part of the Innovation for Impact session, Ali shared with delegates our work in the area of lower carbon concrete – including our Envisia product. He also shared insights into the progress we’re making to lower our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions and decarbonising the cement manufacturing process. Here we share a video capturing Ali’s talk. 📹 #sustainability #innovation #lowercarbonconcrete #decarbonisation #cement #concrete #ENVISIA #BuildingSomethingGreat

About us
Boral is the largest vertically-integrated construction materials company in Australia. Our network includes prized quarry and cement infrastructure, bitumen, construction materials recycling, asphalt, and concrete batching operations. We employ about 9,000 employees and contractors across our operations that span more than 360 sites nationwide. Did you know? In one of our latest joint ventures, Connect Sydney, we’ve partnered with Service Stream and Johnson Controls to work with Transport for NSW to provide the road corridor services to the Sydney Harbour Zone – an area that stretches from Sydney’s coastline to suburbs like Galston in the city’s north, Strathfield in the west, and Milperra in the south. The area includes over 1000 km of state roads, 9 million square metres of asphalt pavements, over 1700 traffic lights, 268 bridges and hundreds of school safety zones. Aggregates are a critical ingredient in creating high-quality concrete. To ensure optimal quality and seamless production, we leverage our extensive network of quarries – 76 across Australia - to supply aggregates to our cement and concrete facilities. This gives us greater control over the quality and consistency of the materials used in our products. By managing the supply chain from the quarry to the concrete facility, we maximise efficient resource use and ensure that the aggregates used meet the necessary specifications. We're very proud of our role in this collaboration to help further Melbourne’s infrastructure and growth. #infrastructure #sustainability #recycling #BuildingSomethingGreat
We are thrilled to announce the recent completion of a major project for Melbourne Water. Teaming up with Boral & Delta Group, we delivered almost 80,000 tonnes of VicRoads approved, cement-treated recycled concrete for the renewal of sludge drying pans at the Western Treatment Plant. Originally tasked with delivering 800 tonnes per day, we often doubled that, reaching up to 2000 tonnes to keep the project moving ahead of schedule. A big thank you to Melbourne Water for the opportunity, Boral & Delta Group for their support, the contractors on site, and of course our incredible operations team and drivers who worked tirelessly to make this possible. We're extremely pleased with the completion of such a successful and sustainable project and proud to continue contributing to Melbourne's infrastructure and growth. Melbourne Water Boral Delta Group

ENVISIA®, part of our lower carbon concrete range, was designed from the outset to reduce carbon emissions associated with concrete production. Cement manufacture is a key carbon-emitting step in concrete production, so less cement can mean lower levels of embedded carbon in concrete. As part of our longstanding partnership with Road Safety Education Limited, and support of its RYDA road safety program, we were delighted to present Maitland Police’s Senior Constable Alison Stewart with the Boral Police Award for 2024 yesterday. At a special presentation at Singleton High School, Alison received her award for her dedication to road safety education and instrumental work in facilitating school, police officer and road safety expert participation throughout the Hunter region. Our General Manager Concrete Regional NSW David Hardy was on hand to present the award and said: “Alison has contributed greatly to safer roads for road users and the communities she serves, and we’re delighted to present her with this award.” During the day, students at Singleton High School participated in the RYDA program which involved the participation of one of our drivers Gian Didonna and a Boral Agi – deepening the students experience of some of the considerations when near heavy vehicles on the road, including visibility challenges, turning circles and stopping distances. Thank you Gian for your involvement in helping to educate the next generation of drivers and congratulations once again to Senior Constable Alison Stewart – winner of the Boral Police Award for 2024. Our Perth team has been busy Building Something Great with the $288 million extension of Stephenson Avenue over Mitchell Freeway. The project will be pouring over 26,000m3 of concrete and includes multiple bridges and surrounding infrastructure. With difficult night pours, high specification concrete, work in confined areas with significant time constraints – it’s teamwork (one of our values) that has helped us deliver success. We’re recycling for a better future and accept inbound materials from demolition and excavation sites. Our recycling centres are now equipped to handle and repurpose a range of inbound materials. We can arrange for the materials to be collected and transported to one of our local recycling centres as part of our Circular Materials Solution. Materials we can collect include: 🚛 concrete 🚛 brick 🚛 reclaimed asphalt 🚛 excavation sand 🚛 sandstone 🚛 tunnel spoil, and 🚛 Potentially Acid Sulfate Soils (PASS) Each type of inbound material that can be recycled is carefully processed and repurposed into new sustainable products that contribute to helping our customers build more sustainably. We actively participate in the construction circular economy in various ways – and we’re proud to have the ability to turn old road surfaces into Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP). RAP can be incorporated into new asphalt production to lower environmental impacts and costs – some of our plants are able to include up to 30% of RAP, and we’re working to increase this ratio. Our lower carbon INNOVO™ system aims to improve sustainable outcomes by incorporating everyday products that are likely to end up in landfill and repurposing them into roads around the country. Using circular economy principles, we leverage our network of recycling and laboratory facilities to process construction waste material otherwise destined for landfill, back into the construction process as new material. Last financial year we received and reprocessed more than 2 million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation materials for re-use in construction.
