It's officially the first day of summer here in Sydney 🌞 It may have been a drizzly couple of days, but that won't stop the cosmos, centaurea, and cornflowers from bursting with colour across the Robbie Burns garden and wildflower meadows. Which summer flowers are you most looking forward to? 📍 Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Apprentice case study: Maddie Wilson 🌿 Thanks to a new Bert Evans apprentice scholarship, Madeleine Wilson, an Apprentice Horticulturalist at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, will receive financial support to complete her apprenticeship study under the "mature-aged and women in non-traditional trade" category. Maddie was previously working in copywriting before taking up the apprenticeship. This scholarship is a fantastic recognition of her hard work as she steps into the Horticulture and Living Collections team, beginning her journey in the wonderful world of plants. If you've been dreaming of switching out the office for the great outdoors, then this weekend is your last chance to apply to be a 2025 Horticultural Apprentice at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney. 👉 Find out more: https://bit.ly/41afgAC

Latest soundtrack release: cicadas, coming to a Botanic Garden near you 🐜🌳 These Masked Devil cicadas are producing an orchestra of sound in the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah as they morph into the barks of trees to act as miniature pruning devices. Their song can reach the decibel level of a leaf blower or lawnmower! These mini horticulturalists can also aerate soil to provide more nitrogen once they die, which helps trees grow. Welcome to summer... 🌞 📷 Cyclochila australasiae species including Yellow Monday, Blue Moon, Black Bandit and Green Grocer cicadas by njephotos

An oasis in the city. This spot in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is flanked by magnificent Australian rainforest trees that seem to stretch to the skyscrapers above. A riot of colour in spring and verdant green in early summer, the Spring Walk is one of the oldest horticultural displays in the Garden. Each year our talented horticulturalists create massed themed plantings of bulbs and annuals in both spring and summer to complement the shrubs and trees. 📍 Spring Walk, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney https://bit.ly/4hVxo7l
