  • 🔥 Keep Batteries Out of Bins! 🔥 Battery fires are a growing risk to our waste and recycling industry. To tackle this issue, Green Industries SA is launching a FREE Embedded Battery Drop-Off Weekend on 23rd and 24th November, 9am to 3pm, and CAWRA is proud to support this important initiative. This trial event provides an opportunity to safely dispose of all those unwanted battery-powered items piling up in our homes, sheds, and workplaces. By properly disposing of these items, we can reduce the risks of fires in our trucks and recycling facilities and help protect our environment. This event focuses on embedded batteries in small appliances, particularly lithium-ion batteries. Our CEO, Leah Maxwell sums it up nicely, “These lithium ion batteries are in such common use across all our homes and are often embedded inside an appliance where you can’t see them. But if you can recharge something, it definitely has a battery inside.” 📅 Drop-off dates: Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24 ⏰ Time: 9 AM - 3 PM 📍 Locations: - Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre, 181 Morphett Road, North Plympton - Campbelltown City Council Works Depot, 6 Newton Road, Campbelltown - Heathfield Resource Recovery Centre, 32 Scott Creek Road, Heathfield - NAWMA Resource Recovery Centre, Gate 3, Bellchambers Road, Edinburgh All embedded batteries under 20kg will be accepted. Examples include ♻ Bluetooth speakers and headphones ♻Electric toothbrushes ♻E-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards ♻Flashing/light-up toys (especially hard plastic products) ♻Personal care devices (shavers, massagers) ♻Powerpacks and portable chargers ♻Remote-controlled and ride-on toys ♻Cordless vacuums and robotic vacuums ♻Vapes and e-cigarettes ♻Wearable devices (smartwatches, trackers, medical aids) For more details, visit: https://lnkd.in/gnK3zPD7 #Sustainability #Batteries #Environment #Adelaide #Recycling #Waste #GreenIndustriesSA #Lithium

  • "Unfortunately many residents don't realise throwing batteries in their household bins is causing potentially deadly fires and explosions in our suburbs.’’ This morning, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has published an article highlighting the dangers of residents placing batteries in their kerbside bins. This article is one of many. Across the country, waste collection trucks and processing facilities are experiencing sparks, fires and explosions on a weekly basis due to batteries being incorrectly disposed of. The above quote was given by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane City Council, Adrian Schinner, but it is a sentiment shared by CAWRA and countless other facilities around Australia. Take a moment to read the article below and see how much of a positive impact diverting your batteries can have on the environment and waste processing facilities like ours 🏭 https://lnkd.in/g98Dmu5c

  • On CAWRA's behalf, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Leah Maxwell as CAWRA's new Chief Executive Officer. Leah has nearly two decades of experience in the waste and resource recovery industry. During that time she has established herself as a distinguished leader through her roles in both state and local government. Most recently, as the Executive Officer of the Adelaide Hills Region Waste Management Authority (AHRWMA), Leah has led the Authority through a period of significant transformation. Her leadership was marked by the establishment of robust governance frameworks, the creation and implementation of a visionary strategic plan, and the enhancement of regional waste management facilities and Member Council services. Under Leah’s guidance, AHRWMA embraced best practice, fostered community empowerment, and advanced the principles of the circular economy across the region. Her efforts not only improved operational efficiencies but also strengthened regional collaboration and service delivery. Leah brings this wealth of experience with her as she transitions to the role of CEO at the Central Adelaide Waste & Recycling Authority (CAWRA), along with her proven track record of success in waste and environmental management. Enthusiastic about this next chapter, Leah is eager to continue driving innovative solutions and contributing to the progress of the Waste and Resource Recovery Industry. Please join the CAWRA Board and team in welcoming Leah to her new role. We can't wait for her to start on 26 August 2024. @catherinecooper Paul Sutton Angela Evans Claire Boan Mark Withers @davidspeir John Niarchos City of Charles Sturt City of Port Adelaide Enfield #localgovernment #wasteandresourcerecovery #recycling

  • On behalf of the CAWRA - Central Adelaide Waste and Recycling Authority Board, I would like to announce that John Niarchos has recently advised his departure as CAWRA CEO to take up an exciting opportunity as Executive Director at United Group Australia. John’s input during his time as CEO of CAWRA has been exceptional. The Board is thankful to John for his tireless efforts and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge his many achievements during this time. These include delivering a major program of upgrade works to the CAWRA MRF in collaboration with Wastech Engineering and Visy Recycling. These improvements have substantially improved plant speed and operational efficiency and will have ongoing financial and other benefits to CAWRA, its Constituent and client Councils and our offtake partners. The CAWRA Board has been very pleased to accept John’s offer to continue working with us in a part-time capacity as Strategic Advisor. His work will focus on CAWRA’s commercial relationships and opportunities as we move forward and grow the organisation ‘beyond the MRF’ to delivering a broader suite of waste and recycling services to its Constituent Councils and their communities. Please also join me in welcoming Adrian Ralph, who has commenced as CAWRA’s Interim #CEO. Adrian is currently General Manager Asset Management Services for the City of Charles Sturt. He brings significant international and national engineering, operational and commercial experience gained in the mining, heavy industrial, civil infrastructure and manufacturing sectors at a number of large corporations including Boart Longyear, Babcock International Group, Boral Construction Materials and Sims Metal Management Limited. Adrian’s experience, combined with his professional engineering qualifications and his more recent work within Local Government, make him the ideal choice to support CAWRA’s ongoing work while it recruits for a new CEO. Adrian will continue in his role as General Manager at the City of Charles Sturt throughout this period. Please join me in welcoming Adrian Ralph to this new role. Further detail on CAWRA’s CEO recruitment process will be circulated in due course. • Clean Up Australia Day is just around the corner and is about more than just picking up litter from our streets, it’s a reminder to us all on how to manage our waste. Recycling is a vital cog in waste management, and it’s important to keep contamination out of our yellow bin to give our recyclables a better chance at a new life.   Week to week, contaminants like nappies, clothing, polystyrene, and soft plastics make their way into our kerbside recycling bins. The next stop? Our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). These waste items have a negative impact on the recycling process. Here at CAWRA, we have sophisticated technology and infrastructure to separate valuable recycling material from the rest.   Non-recyclable waste is separated, compacted, and transported to landfill. It’s costly to manage, and limits our ability to recycle more. Can you guess what other waste items we find coming in to our MRF?
