Are you a small business impacted by the economic downturn over the past 12 months? Did you know you’re eligible for support, even if you’re not a supplier of the steelworks or mines? The Whyalla Small Local Business Support Grant program is part of the government support package announced last week, providing grants to Whyalla-based businesses and not-for-profit organisations that have experienced a reduction in revenue as a result of the decline in activity at the steelworks and mines. Grants of $10,000 are available to help recipients meet standing business costs, including utilities, salaries and rent. Recipients may also use this grant to: • seek financial advice • adjust the business to be viable in the changed local context • develop the business and extend reach through marketing and communications activities • retain and support existing employees To find out more, head to https://lnkd.in/gzC8udsR and look for the relevant tab. The visit to Whyalla today by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Peter Malinauskas has seen an unprecedented $2.4 billion investment committed to the long-term future of Whyalla and its steelworks. Just as importantly, this package will assist local steel and mining contractors with their outstanding debts, while ensuring they are paid for the valuable work they do for the operations. This will assist local contractors to get back on their feet, in-turn allowing the full Whyalla operations supply chain to resume. Mayor Phill Stone said while there was still work to be done in finding a new owner, this was one of the most significant days in Whyalla’s history: “This is a massive injection into our city and a show of confidence in our future. The announcement is the result of close collaboration over a long period between federal, state and local government. I sincerely thank the Prime Minister and the Premier for their unwavering support, belief and trust in our city to enable the steelworks to reach its full potential for the benefit of our community, our state and our nation.” Check out the full Federal Government announcement here for all the details: https://whycc.au/4bb1yk8

With mounting community concerns regarding alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the Westland area, it was decided at this month’s council meeting to seek residents’ feedback on the implementation of a city-wide dry zone. While we as a council cannot solve this issue on our own, the one thing within our control is the area of the city covered by a dry zone. It’s important we hear from the broader community before making a decision, as there could be numerous consequences from such a significant change, so any decision needs to be fully informed and considered by weighing up all the potential pros and cons. There are also legislated State Government timeframes to make any major changes to a dry zone – including a four-month consultation period – so we will act as quickly as possible within these requirements. We did consider expanding the existing dry zone – rather than going city-wide – but it was deemed this would simply shift the problem to someone else’s doorstep, so there was no ‘easy fix’ that seemed ideal, other than the blanket dry zone. Most importantly to consider – there is no silver bullet and a dry zone will not solve the problem on its own. It will take a focused, multi-agency group to tackle the cause of the ongoing issues to achieve real improvements. We have already sought the views of key local agencies on areas such as housing; increased police resources; and helping those at-risk to access support; and will continue to work with them to implement initiatives within their control. In the meantime, it’s critical we hear from as many residents as possible on this issue. We will start the community engagement shortly, including face-to-face opportunities; online / physical surveys; and targeted stakeholder engagement. Keep an eye on our website and the My Local Services app for more details (download here: https://whycc.au/MLS) This is a very complex, sensitive and emotive issue, so please read our release – including the full council report and extensive FAQ – before making any comment: https://whycc.au/42VZw5b. We also ask that all comments are made with respect and consideration – any deemed to breach our digital terms of use will be deleted.
