About us
Over the last three decades Clean Up Australia Day has grown into the nation's largest community-based environmental event. Now one of the country’s most recognised and trusted environmental organisations, Clean Up Australia provides free resources and materials to communities, schools and youth groups all year round, supporting Australians everywhere clean up, fix up and conserve the environment. Today the focus is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated. We want to lead the way in collaborating with organisations who take an innovative approach to sustainability, and to celebrate business models and systems which support a circular economy.

And it’s amazing news for Australia on the 'right to repair' front, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers announcing last week that the Commonwealth will introduce a general right to repair – ensuring access for households and businesses to repairs at competitive prices, as well as repair information. Repairability is essential to maintaining products in use for as long as possible – and keeping them out of landfill! Congratulations to Professor Leanne Wiseman and the entirety of the Australian Repair Network who have tirelessly advocated for the need for reform in Australia to better support product durability and a right to repair. In Australia, there are over 30 battery-related fires occurring daily in waste and recycling streams across the country. That amounts to more than 10,000 fires a year! A reminder to all the dedicated Clean Up Australia community that batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, and those in electronics like laptops or scooters cannot be disposed of in kerbside bins. Drop off your household batteries at B-Cycle points, or use Recycle Mate to identify other safe drop-off points for larger batteries – at community recycling centres, participating stores, or transfer stations. Read more about the dangers of battery fires and the waste sector’s recent call for urgent action: https://lnkd.in/geMEn8Nt #CleanUpAustralia #batteries

Are you concerned about packaging and soft plastics in Australia? Rightly so – our plastic packaging recycling rate is sitting at only 20%, despite a 70% target! Packaging is also hugely problematic in our environment, accounting for 55% of all reported litter to Clean Up Australia during FY23. The Federal government wants to hear from you on how to tackle the packaging waste and litter crisis. Packaging producers need to be legally responsible for their packaging. Head to cutthewrap.org.au today and be part of the solution – sign the open letter prepared by Boomerang Alliance or send in a submission by Monday October 28. Together let's fix Australia's packaging problem once and for all. #cutthewrap
