A SYDNEY BASED PILOT PROGRAM IS OFFERING FREE DENTAL CARE FOR SENIORS. 100 people aged 65 or over are trialing a senior’s dental benefits schedule trial for a duration of 4 months at no cost to the participants. The group of dental industry leaders at the helm of the private health initiative are calling for the pilot to receive federal government backing, so more older Australians can benefit. Acting CEO of COTA Australia, Mr Corey Irlam noted the trial demonstrates how a national dental scheme for seniors is urgently required now and into the future, and how evolving innovative technology such as 3D printers can produce low cost dentures and help combat some of the costs associated with dental health. You can listen to the full interview here; https://lnkd.in/gXXGrMDJ COTA Australia continues to lobby Government for a Seniors Benefit Dental Scheme. Government has stated they are working in partnership states and territories to introduce a National Oral Health Plan.

  • Did you know, as we grow older, alcohol can affect our bodies differently, increasing the risk of injury and illness? Many older Australians believe their drinking habits are safe, but in reality, they often exceed recommended guidelines. Since they may not recognise the risks, they are less likely to seek help or cut back on their alcohol consumption if needed. Some key effects of drinking as we get older are: • Increased sensitivity to alcohol • Higher risk of falls and injuries • Interactions with medications • Cognitive decline • Mood disorders & increased risk of addiction • Dehydration • Impact on sleep https://buff.ly/3D0NHj5

  • Important messages in today's Opinion piece in the @Mercury newspaper from our Board President, Ingrid Harrison. Reach out to those around you this Christmas - a smile, Christmas card, invitation for a cuppa, offer to help out - not all of us are looking forward to this festive time. Here at COTA Tasmania, we will continue to raise the systemic issues that impact on our ability to age well, stay independent and able to participate fully in our communities. Access to good health and aged care, safe housing, employment opportunities, transport options, support with digital systems and access to social activities that keep us connected - all these things impact on our wellbeing and how valued we feel.
