New framework of services for older people needed Current approach to commissioning services questioned at seminar on ageing Chair of Sage Advocacy tells national seminar on ageing that “we must move beyond policy making to the construction of a new social institution – a ‘GAA for Care’ ” A new ‘Trust’ style social enterprise described as – ‘a GAA for Care’ – should be developed across Ireland to address the social, care and community needs of an aging population. Delivering the keynote address at the high-profile Forty Shades of Grey seminar in Dublin today Sage Advocacy Chair Mark Mellett said: “To meet the social and economic challenges faced by an ageing Ireland we need a new organisational form, which has credibility and State support – which guides rather than is led by the private sector – and which will harness the goodwill in communities and families.” Read more at the link: https://lnkd.in/eU5J8KE4

It’s always exciting to see the work we do at the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) across so many areas. This new report features more work around sustainability, which is exciting! Recently, both the BSL and my Environment studies have made me rethink how we approach measuring poverty in Australia. There is so much potential in developing broader poverty indexes that include key factors directly affecting quality of life. For example, we know that climate change impacts all Australians, with low-income households likely to be hit the hardest. It's time to incorporate this understanding into measuring what matters.
We’re proud to present our annual report for 2024, where you can explore our impact and key achievements over the past year as we work to build a fairer Australia. It highlights significant milestones in our programs and services, shares stories of transformation, and details our crucial work in research, policy and advocacy. Aim for accountability : 📢 Advocacy for change in legislative and/or regulatory texts, particularly in terms of harm reduction, must absolutely rely on formal or informal community-based organizations (CBOs), and local communities (elected and local leaders), so that it is not « above ground », with results parachuted onto the beneficiaries and populations. The building must be built like a pyramid with a wide base.

Today we released our MMIWG2S+ scorecards. Developed annually, these scorecards hold both NWAC and the federal government accountable for completing the actions required to end the MMIWG crisis. Over the past year, NWAC has made considerable progress towards the actions we laid out in our MMIWG2S+ action plan, Our Calls, Our Actions. Critical research, grassroots advocacy, and ongoing capacity building with our Provincial and Territorial Member Associations has led to substantial progress or completion of all 66 actions. This represents a major step towards ending the ongoing crisis. However, the work is not done, and we remain committed to upholding the rights of Indigenous WG2STGD+ People.
