Supporting Indigenous land & sea management, Indigenous Protected Areas & Indigenous Rangers across Australia & beyond
About us
Country Needs People is a registered Australian non-profit working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander landholders to protect nature, support culture, create jobs and more by supporting community-based Indigenous land and sea management across Australia and beyond. We collaborate with a national and growing network of more than 41 traditional owner-led grassroots land and sea management groups, including Indigenous rangers. These groups – our partners network – manage the majority of Australia’s growing Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) estate which currently covers almost 75 million hectares of land and sea country from the temperate south to the tropical north of the continent. We also work internationally, with strong and ongoing relationships with like-minded organisations such as Land Needs Guardians and the Indigenous Leadership Initiative in Canada. Country Needs People keeps pressure on governments to deliver: ● Well-tailored, long-term and growing funding to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-based land and sea management sector ● Support for meaningful ongoing jobs where they are needed most, on traditional lands and from very remote locations (where there are few other employment opportunities) to regional and urban areas ● Appropriate policy settings to better support traditional landholders to strengthen their connection to Country and share their knowledge with future generations. We believe Australians of every background working together can help build a brighter future for our natural heritage by supporting the original owners and managers of the beautiful lands and seas we all call home.

👀 Do you know where pollies stand on WA’s Aboriginal Ranger Program? We’ve done the work pressing pollies for their position should they get elected. You can read and share the results here: https://lnkd.in/gqerX2yu It’s good to see there is support across the spectrum for the critical work that Aboriginal Rangers are doing but be assured that after the WA Election, we will be keeping a close eye on the elected government and ensure that they stick to their promises, and are held accountable. 🙏 A huge thank you to all our WA supporters who’ve signed petitions and shared our posts. We’ll never tell you how to vote, that’s your choice, but we will work to ensure all governments support Aboriginal Rangers into the future. #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge #traditionalknowledge #aboriginal #auspol #waelection #wapol

Our mates at Arabana Aboriginal Corporation in South Australia are on the job working to protect threatened species 🐾 This involves feral cat control which involves installing camera traps to map out feral cat populations for effective management. They’re also putting out cat traps but unfortunately these feral cats are notoriously sneaky and are avoiding them so far. But great stuff Arabana Rangers keeping on the job 👍🏽 Caring for Country is a day to day effort, year in year out. We love the commitment Arabana Rangers are showing. Check out these great pics and give this post a like to thank them for their hard work. #CountryNeedsArabana #ArabanaRangers #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge #traditionalknowledge #aboriginal
📸 The Arabana Rangers recently conducted a trip to Finniss Springs, setting up a series of cameras and cat traps as part of their ongoing wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts. These cameras will be checked in a few months to gather valuable data on local wildlife. Although no cats were captured during this trip, the Rangers remain committed to reducing the cat population, which poses a significant threat to small native animals on Arabana Country. This important work will continue on future trips to protect the health and diversity of our ecosystems. The Arabana Rangers are dedicated to preserving Arabana Country and its native wildlife for future generations. #WildlifeConservation #EnvironmentalMonitoring #ArabanaRangers #NativeWildlife #IndigenousLandManagement #ArabanaAboriginalCorporation

The staff and Board at Country Needs People wish to extend our heartfelt thoughts and sympathy to the friends and family of Ngalkangila and the Wellings-Nabulwad extended family. She signed many of our petitions over the years supporting better conditions for Indigenous Rangers and caring for Country right across Australia showing her thought for others. Our thoughts in particular to her dad Pete and family who we have worked with over many years. Her life was a commitment to family, community and Country through her music and art, and both she and her little one, along with all her family and friends at Gundjeihmi, in Kakadu and Darwin and further afield are in our hearts at this time of grieving.

Sign our petition TODAY to ensure Indigenous Rangers keep protecting nature and culture for all of Australia. With a federal election looming, the future is uncertain. Please send a message to your local pollie to tell them that Indigenous Rangers and their work is important to you and us all. Indigenous Rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas are an Aussie success story. They not only provide jobs in the bush but keep people and culture strong, manage fire, invasive species and more. We know from experience that federal politicians need to hear from you to maintain and grow support for Indigenous Rangers and the critical work they do. Sign our petition and send them a message today. PS: We’ll never tell you how to vote, that’s your choice, but we do encourage you to ask each and every pollie and party to step up in supporting Indigenous Rangers into the future. 📸 Photo: Budj Bim Rangers Heath Smith & Aaron Bamblett by Annette Ruzicka. #indigenousrangers #auspol #federalelection #environment #caringforcountry #alwayswasalwayswillbe

Great to see the Mimal Land Management team get together for their 2025 Healthy Country Plan 😎 We usually see Indigenous Rangers working hard doing cultural burns, revegetating, camera trapping and more but don’t see the less photogenic but equally important strategising and planning behind the scenes…which is why we love to see this sneak peek in their recent video. With so much Traditional Knowledge to share, jobs to plan and threats to tackle, Indigenous Rangers plan out their management goals, methods and strategy to make sure they’re as effective and efficient as possible. Long term plans are often the only way to tackle major threats, which is why commitments of long term funding and support for Indigenous Rangers are crucial to successful Indigenous Ranger programs. What is a Healthy Country Plan? Watch the video to find out! Give the video a like to wish the Mimal Rangers success for the big year ahead! 👍🏽 https://lnkd.in/gZ5nvnrr #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge #traditionalknowledge #aboriginal

We were lucky enough to visit our Yirrganydji Ranger friends in Far North Queensland recently, exploring their stunning rainforests, mangroves and beaches with Photographer Annette Ruzicka. Yirrganydji Country extends from Diju (Port Douglas) in the north to Cairns city area in the south and includes the World Heritage Wet Tropics. Yirrganydji Land & Sea Rangers manage Land and Sea Country aiming to conserve and enhance nature and culture for the benefit of current and future generations. Their work includes fire management, protection of threatened species and their habitats, pest plant and feral animal management, visitor management, research and monitoring and cultural heritage management. The Yirrganydji Rangers are doing a fantastic job managing Country and protecting nature, and nurturing deep customary knowledge, practices and lore 😎 Thanks so much to Gavin and the crew as well as Dawul Waru for supporting our trip on Country, and thank you for all your inspirational work keeping nature and Country strong. #indigenousrangers #environment #conservation #rangers #indigenous #firstnations #indigenousknowledge #traditionalknowledge #aboriginal

Country Needs People welcomes WA Opposition Leader Shane Love’s statement as reported in NITV “The WA Nationals have always supported the WA Aboriginal Ranger Program and we will continue to do so” Shane Love said. With the WA election rapidly approaching, it’s important that we know the detail of exactly how parties plan to support this positive investment for WA’s regional, remote and urban areas. The Aboriginal Ranger program is a proven success story critical in supporting jobs in Community across WA, as well as for the protection of Country, culture and the environment. This is why we’re calling for all parties to commit to support WA’s Aboriginal Ranger Program. With the election just weeks away, we urge every West Australian to sign our petition TODAY to keep the pressure on all candidates and parties to make clear how they will support WA’s Aboriginal Ranger Program.
