Our media matters! Last week NITV attended the 2024 Converge First Nations annual media conference on Ngunnawal & Ngambri Country in Canberra. Well done to First Nations Media Australia - the First Nations sector gathered to showcase and recognise the essential role of our media in amplifying the voices, stories, and cultural narratives of our communities and peoples across the country. National Indigenous Television (NITV), part of SBS since 2012, is Australia's leading platform for First Nations stories
About us
National Indigenous Television (NITV) is Australia’s leading platform for First Nations storytelling. Whether it’s trusted news and current affairs, documentaries, drama, entertainment, sport, or kids programming, NITV is created by, for and about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. At NITV, we stand on the shoulders of giants that paved the way for our channel and platforms to exist and ensure Australians hear a diversity of perspectives from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, about the best path forward to improve outcomes for First Nations communities. The channel was born out of the First Nations media movement and first broadcast in 2007, as one of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody for our people to tell their own stories and see positive representations of ourselves on screen, In 2012, we launched free to air as part of the SBS network. giving every Australian the opportunity to connect with 65,000 years of culture, Country and community. Today we reach more than million Australians each month on TV alone, and connect with communities and audiences across all platforms, including online, social media, radio and SBS On Demand. NITV is a Walkley and Logie award winning media network, partnering with international brands to share original First Nations stories with more audiences. It is the home Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander television news service in NITV News, Australia’s longest running Indigenous affairs television program in Living Black, and the only Indigenous current affairs show that travels to every state and territory to connect with and share the perspectives of communities across the continent in The Point. With content to inspire, delight and inform all Australians with NITV’s children’s slot, Jarjums, which has also included award winning programs Little J and Big Cuz and Grace Beside Me.

The NITV Muy Ngulayg First Nations hub has launched on SBS On Demand! It's a go-to space to enjoy the best of our stories – from here and our global Indigenous partners around the world. Muy Ngulayg is from the Kala KawawYa language of the Western Torres Strait, and means ‘inner knowledge’ - we hope the hub will be a place learning to educate and entertain every Australian. And we’re proud that it also features beautiful artwork by Samuawgadhalgal artist, Deborah Belyea. Did you know NITV reaches more than 3 million Australians every month on TV? Now, we're excited to connect more Australians with our stories, so go and enjoy all the amazing First Nations content on offer at this new streaming destination! https://lnkd.in/gqtCTcWG

#OTD ON 26 October 1985, the Hawke government handed back the title deeds for the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to the Anangu people. Then Governor General Sir Ninian Stephen handed over the title deeds to An̲angu Traditional Owners. An̲angu then signed an agreement leasing the land back to the Australian Parks and Wildlife Service (now National Parks) for ninety-nine years. On Saturday 26 October 2019 - commemorating 34 years since the handback - the Uluru climb was permanently closed. National Indigenous Television, NITV was there to cover the closure. (Commemorative poster by Chips Mackinolty, presented to Governor-General Sir Ninian Stephen on the occasion of the handing back of Uluru to its traditional owners, 1985.)
