DBE Geographer, Associate Professor Tod Jones has successfully led an ARC Discovery project application for the 2025 round, one of six awarded to Curtin University. The highly competitive ARC Discovery grants support groundbreaking university research that expands Australia’s knowledge base and delivers social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits. Dr. Jones’ project, The New Classic Indonesian Arts: Its Emergence and Exclusion, will examine how local communities in archaeologically rich Indonesian regions contribute to the production of Hindu-Buddhist Dharmic arts. Despite their expertise, these communities are often overlooked or misrepresented by heritage institutions. This international collaboration seeks to reposition local knowledge and arts industries as vital to Asian heritage. The research team includes Associate Professor Susanna Castleden (Curtin), Dr. Dedi Adhuri (BRIN), Mr. Adrian Perkasa (Airlangga University), Mr. Transpiosa Riomandha (LKIS), and Mr. Hairus Salim (LKIS). Thank you to the University of Johannesburg for hosting a fascinating roundtable discussion on 'Indigeneity, Decoloniality, Knowledge and Pan-Africanism' with our Curtin University Indigenous study tour and cultural exchange group. The discussion was held at UJ's Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT) with CERT's Prof. Sylvia Vollenhoven (Professor of Practice) and Prof. Morgan Ndlovu (Professor of Indigeneity and Decoloniality), along with Prof. Arthur G.O. Mutambara, Director, UJ Institute for the Future of Knowledge, and Dr Adeoye Akinola, PhD, Head of African Union Studies at UJ's Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC). We would also like to thank our colleague Prof. June Bam-Hutchison from CERT for helping to organise the discussion, even though she was traveling and could not join us on the day. As 2024 comes to a close, we’re proud to reflect on an incredible first year for the Planet Positive program. From welcoming our inaugural scholarship recipients to engaging over 250 high school students in sustainability workshops, this year has been all about driving positive change. Highlights include: ✅ Welcoming four passionate scholarship recipients dedicated to sustainability. ✅ A volunteer planting event at Kings Park, contributing to bushland restoration. ✅ Insightful Lunch-and-Learn sessions with experts sharing innovations in sustainability. ✅ Expanding Planet Positive specialisations to more undergraduate degrees. The DBE GradFest24 Exhibition Launch was an unforgettable evening, drawing almost 800 attendees, including students, staff, and industry leaders. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of IMMERSED, a conceptually striking showcase designed by DBE students Sophia Thomas and Imogen Shanahan. Inspired by scientific visuals, the branding perfectly reflects the synergy of creativity and insight that defines this new wave of talent. Guests explored the dynamic exhibition across three levels of Building 418, each featuring unique colour palettes that brought the themes of various disciplines to life. The immersive journey showcased ground-breaking projects shaping the future of design and the built environment. The exhibition is open to the public daily until Friday, 29 November.
