The Australian Signals Directorate has today released its Annual Cyber Threat Report for 2023-2024. It comes as no surprise that cyber crimes continue to significantly impact Australian businesses, although this latest report has revealed that the average cost of cyber crime in 2023-2024 has decreased compared to the previous financial year. This does not mean that we can relax our collective efforts around cyber security however, as the report also highlights that over 87,400 cyber crime reports were submitted to the ASD over the last year, equalling an average of one report every 6 minutes. Key messages include: ~ Every Australian business and organisation needs to foster a proactive cyber security culture. ~ State-sponsored cyber actors are persistently targeting Australian governments and critical infrastructure, as well as connected systems and their supply chains, for cyber espionage and information-gathering purposes. As such, cyber incidents should be treated as ‘when’ not ‘if’. ~ Incidents should be reported to make us collectively stronger and put cyber threats on everyone’s radar. Report suspicious activity and incidents at cyber.gov.au/report or call 1300 292 371 (1300 CYBER1). Last Friday, our Head of Protective Security Services, Jeremy Watkinson was honoured to be selected to participate on a panel at the 2024 Australia New Zealand Parliamentary IT Conference (ANZPIT) at Parliament House. The panel was hosted by Emily Wingard, Branch Chair of AISA South Australia and was titled "The Positive Impact of Diversity - We are better together". Jeremy joined panellists Dr Eva B., Chief Information Officer for the SA Government and Danielle Schefer, Director of Digital Transformation at the Parliament of NSW for the panel session, where they discussed their experiences relating to the impact that diversity, or lack thereof, has had on their careers. Diversity has been a common theme in Jeremy's professional background, having held roles in the Australian Army, the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection, Australian Border Force, KPMG and more. This appreciation of, and commitment to diversity, has been influenced by Jeremy's experiences in a variety of settings - both in Australia and overseas - where he has seen the measurable positive impacts that diversity can have within any organisation. The ANZPIT conference brought together technology specialists, leaders and innovative thinkers from across the cyber security, information technology and parliamentary landscapes, culminating in a highly successful and enjoyable event for all involved. Sending thanks to the organisers Shilpy Grover, Cyndy Bailey, Peter Evans and team for all of their efforts, and for inviting Jeremy to take part. #anzpit2024 #diversity #cybersecurity #defenceandsecurityexperts

Did you know that it's Cyber Security Awareness Month? 💻🔒 Australia's authority on cyber security, the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has selected the theme of ‘Cyber security is everyone’s business’ for this year's Cyber Security Awareness Month, from 1-31 October 2024. The aim of the campaign is to reinforce the importance for all Australians to talk about cyber security with friends, family and colleagues, and take action where required. As a provider of cyber security services to organisations large and small, we felt it was important to share the campaign's four simple recommendations that everyone can use to improve their cyber security posture. 1) Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): This means that two or more steps are required before you are able to login to online accounts. MFA is a very simple, but effective way to give your accounts an extra layer of protection. 2) Keep devices and software up to date: This can be as simple as ensuring that automatic updates are enabled, or installing updates as soon as possible after your device prompts you. 3) Use strong and unique passwords, such as a passphrase: A recent article by cybernews (see https://lnkd.in/d2cYn3f) showed that an analysis of over 15 billion passwords found in public data breaches revealed the most common password in 2024 was “123456”, and the second most common was “123456789”. 🫢 Passphrases are the more secure version of passwords and are normally made up of three or more random words that are easy for you to remember, but very hard for someone to guess. 4) Recognise and report phishing: Phishing is a trick used by scammers to get you to give them information such as login details. They may impersonate a business or person you trust, or may send you a dangerous link or attachment.
