Does #whaling have a future? Australia’s Nick Gales tackled this question at the 25th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Perth recently. Dr Gales is the new chair of the #InternationalWhalingCommission (IWC). His plenary presentation explored: 🐋 how the exploitation of whales led to a global ban on commercial whaling 🐋 the combination of science, politics and diplomacy at play when it comes to protecting whales and other #cetaceans 🐋 the crucial role of the #IWC in whale conservation and management. He also highlighted the critical contribution of #science to: 🐋 informing diplomacy 🐋 understanding the important role of whales in ocean ecosystems, particularly in the context of climate change. We’re committed to protecting and conserving whales and #ocean health at home and internationally. So we’re excited to be hosting the International Whaling Commission’s next meeting in 2026 here in Australia. The #ocean is a powerful ally in the fight against #ClimateChange. We hosted a #SustainableOceanManagement event at the #COP29Aus pavilion in collaboration with the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy to highlight: 🌊 the range of ocean-based climate solutions that are ready to action now 🌡️ how fully implementing these solutions can provide up to 35% of emission cuts needed to meet a 1.5oC future by 2050. As well as generating about half the oxygen produced on Earth, the ocean has also absorbed: 🥵 more than 90% of excess heat caused by human activity 📉 around 25% of carbon dioxide emissions. But the ocean is now at a tipping point. Together we can turn the tide. #OceanSolutions range from renewable energy to restoring coastal ecosystems. Australia’s #SustainableOceanPlan will help us take effective ocean-based climate actions that deliver outcomes for people, nature and our economy. Good quality water is vital for dialysis treatment and our #NationalWaterGrid projects are helping deliver this to 5 remote First Nations communities across the NT and WA 🚰. On average each week, a patient can need between 300 and 600 litres of water and have to travel long distances for this life saving treatment. They’ll now be able to stay closer to home and on Country. These projects support the Australian Government’s $18.58 million investment for additional dialysis units under the Better Renal Services for First Nations Peoples program. Young people are powerful agents of change. 💪 Their voices offer unique and innovative approaches for designing and implementing ambitious climate policy and action. To achieve meaningful collaboration with young people, we're creating tangible pathways for youth-led ideas to influence policy outcomes. 💡 At our #COP29 Australian Pavilion, we've created a platform where young climate leaders can express their perspectives, share their achievements, and discuss pathways for amplifying youth impact in climate policymaking across our regions. Follow updates from the Australian Pavilion in Baku to see young people take centre stage 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wONvT #COP29Aus #COP29Azerbaijan #ClimateAction #Sustainability
