This week we learnt a lot about Gim in Korea. Pyropia is grown in 21-45 day cycles between November and April. A 100m line is able to produce 250kg wet each cycle. The nets are trimmed using specially equipped boats and placed back for another growing cycle. When the boats are full, they return to the dock, and the product is auctioned. Drift have been invited by ASSA - Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance to South Korea as part of the DFAT Australia-Korea foundation seaweed industry leaders delegation.

Pyropia in South Korea is known as 'Gim' (more commonly known as nori from Japan). It is seeded onto nets, which are lifted out of the water every few days for around 12 hours, no more than 24 hours. This period of desiccation kills off most of the unwanted species that can colonise the lines. Drift have been invited by ASSA - Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance to South Korea as part of the DFAT Australia-Korea foundation seaweed industry leaders delegation.

Our first day visiting research centres, processing facilities and farms has been incredibly informative, we are learning so much. Especially about the cultivation of a new favourite seaweed ‘Tot’. One of the great things about doing seaweed research is that we always have interesting school projects for Science Week. This year the theme was 'Threatened Species', so we seeded some microscopic kelps onto a shipwreck and some shells to show how restoration efforts are helping to protect kelp ecosystems around Australia. #seaweed #seaweedfarming #restoration #kelp #ScienceWeek

Who ever said seaweed cultivation was hard?!? Typically, the cultivation or kelp involves spore release, gametophyte propagation and fertilisation in the laboratory, and sporophyte development on oceanic farms. But it can be so much more complicated than this: 1.   Sporophytes can develop through parthenogenesis, where sporophytes are produced directly from non-fertilized female gametes. 2.   Parthenogenic sporophytes can either be haploid or diploid, and can have normal morphology. 3.   Haploid and diploid sporophytes can produce spores that give rise to fertile female gametophytes, creating a female life cycle 4.   A haploid sporophyte can emerge directly from a somatic cell of a gametophyte (apogamy) 5.   A diploid gametophyte can develop from vegetative cells of a diploid sporophyte without any meiosis or spore formation (apospory) 6.       Self-fertilization is also possible Thanks Joshua Masel for leading me to the parthenogenesis rabbit hole.
