EAGA’s 2023/24 Annual Report – the Year at a Glance $6M savings to councils and communities >63,000 tonnes of emissions reductions 13 formal advocacy submissions >1,300 businesses engaged on energy efficiency >1.1MW community solar delivered Over the past 12 months, there have been significant signs of progress in Australia’s commitment to climate action. In Melbourne’s east, EAGA continues to deliver projects with regional and state-wide impacts. EAGA's Annual Report encapsulates the tangible environmental benefits and fiscal savings delivered by ongoing projects, while also underscoring the Alliance’s dedication to reducing community emissions. In the Chairperson's statement Cr Suzy Stojanovic, Maroondah City Council, highlighted the impact of the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO). “The initiative is the largest emissions reduction project ever undertaken within the sector and is already delivering substantial cost savings for councils across Victoria.” Cr Stojanovic also emphasised the tangible results of EAGA’s advocacy alongside the other Greenhouse Alliances. “The recent amendments to Victoria’s Planning and Environment Act (March 2024) were a direct result of our ‘planning for a safe climate’ advocacy campaign. As a result, planning authorities will need to explicitly consider greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and climate resilience in day-to-day planning processes.” As suggested by the Chairpersons’ statement, the impact of EAGA’s initiatives often extends beyond Melbourne’s eastern region. Councils outside of EAGA have saved over $9M and reduced emissions by 216,000 tonnes the past 12 months. Read the report to learn more about EAGA’s advocacy and project work.

ACOSS and partners are seeking to understand the impacts of heat on people experiencing financial stress - survey open now. Please share with your communities.
We’re already getting hit with hot summer temperatures. For people living in poorly designed homes who aren’t able to run fans and air-conditioning that could mean that they’re facing indoor temperatures of over 45 degrees. ACOSS is running a survey in partnership with the First Nations Clean Energy Network and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Association (NATSIHA) to understand the impacts of heat on people experiencing financial stress. #FairFastClimateAction #Energy #Heatwave #Climate Will you complete the survey? https://lnkd.in/gK5zc3xJ

Words from our Chair. Thank you to Suzy for their leadership over the past 12 months.
Local Govt Advocate | Family Violence Prevention | Championing Safety & Sustainability Combining lived experience with strategic action to create safer, connected communities.
As Chair of the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (EAGA) Executive Committee in 2024, I've had the privilege of leading our partnering councils through a year of remarkable achievements, as highlighted in our Annual Report. Over the current MOU period (2021-25), we've secured $6M in savings and reduced 63,000 tonnes of emissions for councils and communities. Our initiatives, such as the expansion of the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO) to 60 councils—the largest emissions reduction project ever undertaken in our sector—are setting new benchmarks for sustainability. This week, we hold our final Executive Meeting for 2024, and it's a moment to reflect on the incredible work we've done together. From pioneering battery storage solutions through the GANBIM project to expanding the Solar Savers and Business Energy Savers programs, we've made significant strides in building a more sustainable future. I’m incredibly proud to have worked with such a dedicated group of councils and council officers, and to have played a role in these statewide impacts. You can read more about our progress in the Annual Report here. #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency #LocalGovernment #ClimateAction #EAGA #Leadership

Excellent work from our Alliance cousins. Bravo South East Councils Climate Change Alliance (SECCCA)
Earlier today, council executives, officers, politic leaders and strategic partners from across south east Melbourne gathered at the annual SECCCA's Leadership Forum to explore the challenges and opportunities local government’s face in ensuring a prosperous, vibrant and climate-safe region. Topics of discussion included the issues associated with the ability to adequately insure council assets, the distinction between the physical risk and the transition risk of climate change, and the partnership and funding models required from all levels of government and private sectors to ensure climate resilient infrastructure and built environment. Kindly hosted by Glenn Patterson at Bunjil Place, this year’s event was opened by Cr Lana Formoso, Mayor of City of Greater Dandenong. Dr Battaglia Michael, Towards Net Zero Mission Director, CSIRO provided a keynote speech and also joined a lively panel discussion featuring Timothy King, CFA, CIO Melior Investment Management, Andrew McKeegan, Deputy Secretary Planning & Land Services Department of Transport & Planning and Dr Gillian Sparkes AM FAICD, Chair Westernport Integrated Water Management Forum, moderated by SECCCA CEO Helen Steel. Daniel Pleiter, SECCCA Operations Manager and Simon Woodland, Manager Sustainable Environment Bass Coast Shire Council, showcased one of SECCCA’s keystone projects Enhancing Community Resilience. Planning for a Safe Climate Advocacy Win 🎉 The Victorian Greenhouse Alliances’ Planning for a Safe Climate advocacy campaign has led to the recent amendments to Victoria’s Planning and Environment Act 1987. As a result, the amendments “require consideration of climate change when making planning decisions about the use and development of land under the act and for other purposes, which includes greenhouse gas emissions, reductions targets and increased climate resilience” – a key ask of the campaign. The state-wide campaign to reform Victoria’s planning system began in 2022, as EAGA teamed up with the other Victorian Greenhouse Alliances and the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment (CASBE). The campaign assisted in elevating planning reform on the state agenda ahead of the 2022 election, as CASBE and the Alliances engaged with candidates and Members of Parliament seeking commitments to planning reform. Further efforts came last year when the Alliances sent letters to the Victorian Planning Minister and Climate Action Minister that included the request to amend the Planning and Environment Act.
