On Tuesday, Craig Mitchell, Manager at Electro CA, and Brett Taylor, Business Development Manager at Electro CA, attended the graduation of South Australia's first group of dual-qualified electrical and refrigeration apprentices that was held at TAFE SA's Tonsley campus. The dual trade program, an initiative of NECA SA/NT and RACCA SA, delivers electrical and refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) training concurrently rather than the prior inefficient and expensive consecutive model where two Certificate 3 qualifications could not be undertaken together. The dual trade course is undertaken via a single five year contract of training and satisfies the requirements of UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and UEE32220 Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. The combined apprenticeship requires 1,540 hours of study compared to 1,060 for a single trade. This innovative program results in a multi-skilled technician able to perform the full scope of work of both the electrical and RAC disciplines including the handling of flammable refrigerants, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in the RAC sector.
