A new satellite has been launched into space, with a key distinguishing feature – it's made of wood. Set to be in orbit for six months, LignoSat was constructed using the Japanese technique of honoki, which forgoes the use of glue or screws. It's designed to help researchers evaluate how wood endures conditions in space, including cosmic radiation. Video credit: NASA

Melbourne boasts the world’s largest tram network, with more than 500 trams running up and down 250 km of double track. This demands a constant cycle of innovation and upgrade, a cycle that’s clearly visible across the six generations of trams to have thus far operated across the city. Designed to meet the requirements of the Victorian Government through a competitive tender process, the new G Class fleet, the seventh generation of trams to run on the network, will be built by Alstom in Dandenong, and is set to begin testing in 2025. https://lnkd.in/gV2GGfyN

Professor Michael Milford, electrical engineer and Director of the QUT Robotics Centre, is a self-confessed avid movie geek. The oldest of 10 children raised on a 50-acre bush property in the Northern Territory, Jacinta Kelly has always had family and community at heart. It’s no surprise she has spent her entire career on projects that improve conditions for Territorians. “I have a great sense of pride about being able to influence my community’s way of life for the better. I enjoy going around town and physically showing my kids the projects I’ve been a part of.” But engineering was not her first career choice.
