Joining this powerhouse group dedicated to eradicating asbestos globally was an inspiring way to wrap up 2024. The European Asbestos Forum foundation is a driving force dedicated to collaboration, acceleration of real policy change and ultimately, international asbestos eradication and is driven by the indefatigable Dr. Yvonne Waterman LL.M FFAAM. It was wonderful to be joined by my incredible Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) colleagues Elham H.Beheshti, Tim Driscoll (both who delivered stellar talks), our chair Peter Tighe and Jonathan Walsh from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers (another fabulous presenter) for two days of insights, education and strategy development. Thank you especially to Paul Signorelli OAM for presenting the story of your father and the creation of the Biaggio Signorelli Foundation which drives you every day. And as always, it was a privilege to work alongside the extraordinary and committed warriors Guillermo Villamizar, Liz Darlison MBE DL, Wayne Bagnall MBE Sean Fitzgerald, PG, Arthur Frank and Adam Harding. Thank you Dr. Yvonne Waterman LL.M FFAAM.

  • FAMANZ reposted this

Asbestos exposure is Aotearoa’s number one workplace killer. Around 220 people die each year from preventable asbestos-related disease. The airborne fibres are so small they’re invisible to the naked eye, and can cause harm when breathed in. There are no safe levels of exposure.  The dangers are widely known, so there are no excuses for not managing asbestos safely. Learn how to protect yourself and others at https://lnkd.in/gkWRhKgP

  • The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) partnered with a research team from Deakin University to investigate the levels of asbestos fibres in drinking water that has passed through asbestos-cement (AC) pipes. Australia has approximately 40,000 km of AC drinking water pipes, this being nearly 20% of the total length of the nation’s drinking water pipes.  Read more below.

We have completed a project investigating the levels of asbestos fibres in drinking water that had passed through asbestos cement (AC) pipes. In response to the recommendations from a 2021 report by the World Health Organisation, ASSEA partnered with the research team from Deakin University to undertake this project. Drinking water from a location in regional Victoria was examined, and it was revealed that asbestos fibres were not detected in any of the water samples. In consultation with our working group, we may examine the water from AC pipes in other locations for the presence of asbestos fibres in the future. Read more - https://lnkd.in/gkn9mfNz
