Gippsland Agricultural Group's 'Growing More Topsoil' project looks at ways to augment soil as a drought mitigation measure, with an emphasis on water retention and improved capacity for holding nutrients. Featured by the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub on #WorldSoilDay2024, it's a study we're keen to learn from - and help share the results. #growmoretopsoilgippsland #foodandfibregippslandmembers Federation University Australia Peter Norwood Bill Grant
🌱 World Soil Day 2024 🌱 Today, we celebrate the foundation of all life – #soil! At the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub, we’re excited to highlight the “Grow More Topsoil” project today led by our Gippsland Node, Food & Fibre Gippsland. This innovative research explores ways to double the water-holding capacity of #topsoil and extend its depth to boost resilience against climate variability. This project has already demonstrated tangible benefits, including deeper root growth and enhanced moisture retention – which are both promising outcomes for farmers well beyond #Gippsland. Learn how collaboration, science and community connections are driving #soilinnovation. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gvdW6uVv #VicHub #VicDroughtHub #AusAg #FutureDroughtFund #farming #WorldSoilDay #DroughtResilience

What makes a farm sustainable? Certified organic since 2020, Wilandra Farms operates on a philosophy of #regenerative methods of farming to improve the quality of available natural resources. They utilise energy harvested through wind and #solar, and have undertaken extensive plantings of native trees and #agroforestry species. Particular emphasis is given to the soil, a resource that brings life to the farm by supporting organisms and encouraging #biodiversity. Located at Clydebank in #Gippsland, this award-winning agribusiness has explored the benefits of #multispecies pastures for livestock health, in turn attracting bees and other pollinators to their farm. Owned by Sandra Jefford and Wilco Droppert, Wilandra Farms was recognised in the 2024 Gippsland Food and Fibre Awards for their exemplary sustainable farming practices. #Gippsland Research Farm is currently the site of a project which actively aims to build more #topsoil, with an outlook on improving adaptability to climate variation. In addition to increasing the soil’s nutrient holding capacity, ‘Growing More Topsoil’ seeks to answer two specific questions: 1. Can we double the water holding capacity of our top soil? 2. Can we extend our top soil from 150mm to 300mm deep? Funded by the Future Drought Fund and delivered by Gippsland Agricultural Group (GAgG), the initiative has been underway since mid-2023 and is beginning to produce visible results. In October, progress was showcased at this year’s #GAgG Spring Field Day. https://lnkd.in/g8_ZtjEq #GrowMoreTopsoilGippsland #FutureDroughtFund #DroughtResilienceGippsland #AusGov #AusAg Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub #VicHub
