The closure of B.C. Tree Fruits is a significant loss to our agricultural heritage. For almost a century, this co-op was more than just a business—it was a cherished brand and an icon of trust for 230 farming families in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. With its dissolution, we bid farewell to a piece of our collective history and a brand deeply ingrained in our communities. In the face of changing climates and cultures, it's crucial that we come together to support our fruit growers left without a reliable means to market their produce. Let's work collaboratively to find solutions that provide the necessary assistance to these growers. The disappearance of something as simple as a sticker is a poignant reminder of how swiftly circumstances can evolve. And let’s be honest, who hasn’t accidentally eaten one of those stickers at least once? These are memories not soon forgotten. SCOTTISH FARMED SHELLFISH SECTOR LOOKS TO FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE The figures revealed in the recently published Scottish #Shellfish Farm Production Survey 2023 underlines the resilience of the sector post Covid and its capacity to increase output, according to Dr Nick Lake, CEO of the ASSOCIATION OF SCOTTISH SHELLFISH GROWERS LIMITED . But by God’s grace, we have been able to clear this very big portion.” - Turkson Adzogbleh As I hunt for stories, I’m struck by how crucial supporting services, like weeding, are to the cocoa farmer’s success. Cocoa farming activities must be within a time frame to leverage the weather. Also for Turkson, an weeding the farm is crucial now because the cocoa plants are just babies and require maximum nutrients from the soil. They cannot be left to compete with weeds. So having laborers available to work on time is non-negotiable. But labor, as we’ll find out, will be a challenge in Turkson’s journey.
