Great to be involved in Jamie Oliver's Food Hero Awards in Sydney last week alongside Dannii Minogue, Jessica Rowe, and others! The event was a wonderful celebration of people and groups transforming Australian children's health through food. Our Executive Manager, Jane Martin, was on the expert judging panel, helping to shortlist applications. 🏆 A big congratulations to all the award winners. ❤️

It’s been a decade since Health Star Ratings were first introduced in Australia. Yet just 36 per cent of intended supermarket items carry a Health Star Rating — falling well short of government's 60 per cent uptake target for this year. “With two in three Australian adults currently above a healthy weight, government must make it as easy as possible for Australians to assess and compare packaged products at the supermarket, empowering them to shop healthier options," said our Executive Manager, Jane Martin. Read our media release with The George Institute for Global Health and Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), calling for the system to be mandated: https://lnkd.in/gz6qWGK6
In 2019, the food industry agreed to a Federal government plan to increase the uptake of Health Star Ratings on package food products sold in Australia. That plan involved three annual uptake targets. Last year, the food industry missed their target by 14%. This year, they’ve missed their target by 24%. It’s not good enough. That’s why we're joining forces with The George Institute for Global Health and Food for Health Alliance to support plans by Australia’s Food Ministers to make Health Star Ratings mandatory unless the food industry hits their target of 70% uptake by November 2025.

Food for Health Alliance welcomes the re-introduction of a Private Members Bill into Parliament today by Independent MP Dr Sophie Scamps. The Bill seeks to remove unhealthy food marketing on TV and radio, including subscription (streaming) services, between 6am and 9.30pm and online at all times. Australian children should be able to play, learn and live in a world that supports and promotes their wellbeing, without being bombarded with marketing for unhealthy food. Currently there is no federal regulation specifically designed to protect children from junk food marketing. We applaud Dr Scamps for drawing national attention back to the issue of unscrupulous marketing to kids by the processed food industry. Read more in our media release: https://lnkd.in/gzRG-NPD

Currently, the agreement around how baby formula is marketed in Australia is voluntary, allowing manufacturers to irresponsibly market their products to parents and carers — and without consequences. But in positive news, the Federal Government announced this week it plans to better control how infant formulas are marketed in Australia by moving to mandatory legislation. Our Executive Manager, Jane Martin, spoke with the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia about the proposed changes and the impact they could have.
