We had the pleasure of hosting the Coles Liquor Team on Friday 16th of August. Starting with a lunch and tasting at the Restaurant, we were soon on our way up the hill to the vineyards and winery. After a look over the granite strewn valley, we tasted through some vintage 2023 and 2024 wines in the Barrel Hall with Chief Winemaker, Matt Harrop. We finished off the day with a rabbit butchery demonstration by Matt Fowles – with some extra help from James Kelly! A huge thanks to the Coles Team for spending the day with us! HOW BATS ARE HELPING IN THE VINEYARD Bats are under-appreciated in the role they can play in boosting grape yields, lowering disease risk and reducing the use of chemicals. Kathleen Willcox finds out more. Only spiders, snakes and sharks could possibly outspook the average human more than bats. I mean, fair enough. With wingspans that can reach five-feet, hairless and nude micro-bodies, hog-like noses and hairy faces dominated by fleshy protruding ears and their affinity for hanging upside-down with wings folded, a little side-eye seems if not warranted, at least understandable. (And that doesn’t even touch on the fact that several of the world’s most virulent diseases—including Ebola, Marburg, Nipah have been linked back to various bat species.) But there’s a lot more to love than fear: not only are bats the only group of mammals capable of flight, their uncanny nighttime navigation by acoustic orientation (a.k.a. echolocation) makes them some of the keenest bug-hunters on the planet, and they are essential links in the pollination and seed dispersal chain for a number of plant species. And for vintners in the know, bats are becoming important partners in au naturel pest-and disease management, saving them (potentially) millions of dollars while also reducing their carbon footprint. 🍇 Fowles Wine and UNE pioneer micro-bat study for sustainable pest control🍇 🌿 Fowles Wine, a renowned Victorian winery, has taken a significant leap towards biodiversity and sustainability. Partnering with the University of New England, Fowles is conducting a pioneering study on micro-bats, aiming to harness their pest control abilities to benefit Australia's wine industry potentially saving up to $50 million annually. 🦇 This innovative project focuses on the dietary habits of insect-eating micro-bats within vineyards, exploring their role in natural pest management. Preliminary findings highlight the crucial impact these bats have on controlling agricultural pests, underscoring their value in maintaining vineyard biodiversity. 🌾 In addition to the bat study, Fowles Wine is collaborating with Euroa Arboretum to develop insectariums and seed orchards. This initiative seeks to attract diverse insect life, including predators and pollinators, thereby promoting a balanced ecosystem. The move is particularly vital for regenerating native plant life in bushfire-prone areas of regional Victoria. 🐝 Embracing nature's chaos, Fowles Wine has also integrated beehives into their vineyards. This natural approach ensures the thriving of vines and enhances the flavour profile of their wines, from the Fieldsong range to other bespoke offerings. 🍷 Owner Matt Fowles emphasizes the winery's dedication to working in harmony with nature, reflecting a deep commitment to biodiversity and sustainable winemaking practices. From using restaurant food waste for farm life to collecting run-off water for vineyard irrigation, Fowles Wine sets a remarkable example of eco-conscious viticulture. 🌍 Through groundbreaking research and ecosystem-friendly initiatives, Fowles Wine not only produces award-winning wines but also leads the charge in sustainable winemaking, proving that nature and agriculture can flourish together. #WineIndustry #Sustainability #Biodiversity #EcoInnovation #FowlesWine #Microbats #VictorianWinery
