  • Future Fuels CRC has supported 52 PhD and Masters students to deliver our #research projects while preparing themselves for careers in the #renewablegas industry. 24 students have already completed and moved on to jobs in renewable gas, the energy industry and government. The final students are completing their research this year.   Led by Shaun Coffey, our Education and Training program has taken a very engaged approach to developing students. We have just held our final Residential School in Geelong, following earlier ones in Adelaide and Sydney. These Schools have been an opportunity for our students to build their networks, develop their career planning and learn more about the energy industry. Industry site visits have always been a big part of these Schools with visits to leading renewable gas projects. This year the students joined our Board Directors to visit the Viva New Energy Hub in Geelong, Australia’s first commercially scaled and publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station.   Many thanks to all our students, directors, Viva Energy Australia and everyone who made this Residential School such a success.

Thrilled to share that I received the award for Best Poster at the Australian Hydrogen Research Conference (AHRC) in Perth last year! The conference was a fantastic opportunity to explore cutting-edge energy research in Australia and connect with like-minded individuals. It was inspiring to exchange ideas, seek advice for my own project, and contribute to others’ work. My poster focused on a critical challenge in the transition to hydrogen fuel: understanding the impact of pressure on premixed hydrogen flames. Investigating hydrogen premixed flames under elevated pressure has always been challenging due to their high tendency to flashback. In this work, we successfully stabilised the flame at 10 bar and studied the effects of pressure on flame shape and stability. One key finding from this research is that increasing pressure significantly alters the heat release distribution along the flame length, making the flame more compact. This improves flame anchoring and influences the interaction between the flame and combustor acoustics – a crucial aspect for hydrogen-based combustion systems. I’m deeply grateful to my supervisors, Associate Professor Mohsen Talei, Associate Professor Yi Yang, Dr Farzad Poursadegh and Professor Michael Brear whose guidance and support made this work possible. Looking forward to more collaborations and advancements in hydrogen energy research!

Great to be a part of the CSIRO Australian Hydrogen Research Delegation to the Netherlands last week. Big thanks to Dan O'Sullivan for organising the week, and to all of our hosts in the Netherlands, in particular Quenteijn van Cooten (TNO) for his assistance with the programme. Thanks also to Future Fuels CRC for the opportunity to attend. Lots to take away from the trip and great to see some examples of industry and research institutes working together to put things into practice!

Day 2 Australia-Netherlands Hydrogen Research Delegation: Amsterdam and Rotterdam In the morning, the team split off in two to cover more ground. Dan O'Sullivan, Douglas Proud and I visited the Shell Energy Transition Campus, Amsterdam – also joined for the first time in the delegation by program fellow Jordie Pettit. We were graciously hosted by Dr. Marwa Alansary and Dr Sander Van Bavel, who gave us an insight to development work and focus being undertaken by Shell in their next generation breakthrough research program. Shell is making strides in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and we had a tour of the demonstration plant that produced 500L of green kerosene using green hydrogen. The kerosene produced was used on a commercial flight in a world first. Dr. Marwa explained the systems thinking approach to energy transition, and Shell’s work in areas that are core for them, including a focus on molecules to products and leveraging their extensive resources for synthetic fuel production. Sander and I enjoyed a few chemistry jokes and I got to visit my first lab of the delegation – BONUS, it was an electrochemistry lab! Thank goodness for nerds like us 😊 In the afternoon we visited the Port of Rotterdam, hosted by Corné Hulst and including a presentation from Julia Van Dam from the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency. Some staggering facts and figures about the huge Port: 13% of all EU energy consumption passes through the Port of Rotterdam, and the Port alone contributes to over 8% of Dutch GDP. Such interesting discussion points raised, and many of us came away reflecting on how influential Ports can be in the energy transition. For example, planning for future shipping fuels in major ports and signals from infrastructure preparation may well sway the final mix of fuels on the table globally. At the same time, Ports can’t control the winner and may well to need to include new infrastructure for multiple potential fuels including ammonia, methanol and liquid hydrogen. Ports plan 10-20 years ahead, and it is fascinating to see this insight into the future of the transition laid out. Something we’ve noticed across all our visits is the perception of Australia’s advantage and progress in green hydrogen, and the size of our ambitions. Other regions are already counting on us to do our part. I sincerely hope we don’t let them down. Today in Albury Wodonga the first sod has been turned on one of Australia’s largest renewable hydrogen projects, starting the energy transition for the local gas network and providing a new source of renewable energy for regional industry, homes and businesses. Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, The Hon. Josh Wilson MP, joined us, along with project partners and community leaders to mark the beginning of construction of the Hydrogen Park Murray Valley project. A 10-megawatt LONGi Hydrogen electrolyser will form the centrepiece of the project, generating around 500 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and eliminating upwards of 3,000 tonnes of emissions each year. The renewable hydrogen from the Hydrogen Park will be blended into the local network at up to 10% by volume to commercial and industrial gas users, and around 40,000 Albury-Wodonga homes and businesses. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen MP said, “Producing renewable hydrogen on this scale has never been done in Australia before, so this project is blazing a trail to scale up green hydrogen production, and that’s why we’re backing it.” Our Acting Chief Executive Officer, Cathryn McArthur added, “AGIG is committed to reducing emissions and we believe that renewable gases can play a critical role through the transition - this will be our third renewable hydrogen project, following the success of our Hydrogen Park facilities in South Australia and in Gladstone. “We thank the Australian and Victorian Governments for their support of this project, along with our project partners and the Albury-Wodonga community for welcoming this important facility.” For more details visit https://lnkd.in/gKQdxnEy #renewableenergy #renewablegas #renewablehydrogen #hydrogen #hypmv
