It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond Tabulo, a treasured member and Fellow of GCA, and a dedicated leader in our industry. Known to his friends as "Tabs," Ray was a remarkable individual whose career spanned nearly three decades, leaving a lasting impact on the geospatial profession and inspiring all who knew him. Ray’s journey into surveying began as a chainman with the Queensland Department of Mines, where he was known for his strength, determination, and boundless energy. He embodied the spirit of early field surveyors, traversing rugged landscapes, setting permanent survey marks, and performing challenging fieldwork with remarkable resilience and commitment. In his youth, Ray was an avid footballer, playing prop in the public service league and bringing the same grit to the field as he did to his career. However, a severe car accident altered the course of his life. Doctors said he would never walk again, but Ray defied the odds, demonstrating extraordinary strength of character and determination. He not only walked but went on to earn a degree in surveying, married Tammy, and became the proud father of two children – Jordon and Lucinda. Ray continued to build his career, becoming a registered cadastral surveyor and working as a field surveyor in private practice in Hervey Bay. As his back condition worsened, Ray adapted. His tenacity shone as he pursued further studies, earning a Graduate Diploma of Geomatic Studies and eventually becoming a Senior Spatial Scientist and Director at Cullen & Couper Pty Ltd. Ray was known for his sense of humour, loyalty, and dedication to both his profession and his colleagues. In recent months, despite being in and out of the hospital, he brought joy to those around him with his infectious positivity and wit. Ray will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues who had the honour of working alongside such an inspiring, determined, and endlessly positive individual. Vale Ray.
