President - WA Mining Club. Founder & Director | Careers - Talent - Recruitment - Behaviours Strategist | Board Director | FAusIMM | Passionate about People and Purpose = Performance

This morning I managed to squeeze in a lovely breakfast in my new 'hood' with the amazing Meryl Jones before she heads back to America in her role at RXT Commercial. I was so fortunate to have met Meryl through a mutual mining colleague who convinced us both that we had to make a connection. And I'm forever grateful for that coffee catch up in Dome, Midland 11 years ago. Back then our conversation was around careers in the industry, as Meryl founded Get Into Resources Inc. and how we have to ensure more kids know what pathways are on offer, and we've had many about encouraging more women to consider opportunities too, over the years. And this morning we continue to have that very same discussion, which brought us both to wonder, has the paradigm shifted, and if it has, by how much? And if not, how do we help make that shift? Interestingly enough while at International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) conference last week I was asked to be a industry facilitator in the NextGen's round table sessions to 150 Year 9 students from several NSW schools on behalf of the WA Mining Club. And I asked each table if any of them had parents, friends or relatives that worked in mining. Not one single kid did. I'm sure that wouldn't be the same here in WA, and I am pretty certain several kids who attended IMARC will now consider a career. But what else should we be doing?. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. THE resources HUB I Careers I Talent I Recruitment Consultancy Resourceful Women WA Mining Club CoRE Learning Foundation

The Get Into Resources Inc. team would like to extend heartfelt thanks to BHP for their generous Diamond sponsorship and invaluable contribution to the GIR event. Your support helped us create an engaging and educational experience for students, showcasing the exciting opportunities within the Resources industry. Many of the amazing BHP staff volunteered their time and attended Get Into Resources Inc. event, an annual careers event where high-school students from around Perth spend a day rotating across hands-on activities that show-case various aspects of the resources industry. This year, BHP presented an activity titled ‘Mining: the hidden backbone to modern living’ where students were challenged to connect rocks from assets to everyday items while the BHP team demonstrated why the resource industry is critical to our lives. The overall stand-out of the event was no doubt BHP’s ‘ice-cream booth’ – students were lining up to discuss how minerals are used and then rewarded with a tasty scoop of ice-cream from our indigenous provider 'Gather Foods'. Many stories were shared across the booth and activity about experiences in the resource industry, what pathways can be taken for entry and what 'industry life' is like in general. 🍦 Two of the BHP team were Guest Speakers on Wednesday: Prutha Shah and Jemma Hutchins, who shared their experience so far in the industry and how they came be to be here - many thanks for sharing your journeys so far.   A fantastic event with great feedback from the students and schools - a huge thank you to all the volunteers who proudly represented the industry and made BHP stand out as an employer of choice. A massive call out to Prutha Shah, Voula Keating & Fiona Bodycoat for organising most of the BHP side of things for this outstanding student-industry event. Joshua Raines, Meena Natekar The Get Into Resources Inc. Committee are incredibly grateful for BHP's commitment to helping the next generation explore and pursue careers in this vital industry. Thank you once again for your partnership and support.

We’re thrilled to extend our deepest gratitude to Rio Tinto for their incredible support as a Diamond Sponsor of the Get Into Resources Inc. 2024 event! Your commitment to nurturing future talent in the resources sector is truly inspiring. A special shoutout to the Rio Tinto volunteers led by Kylie Walling & Analissa Yang who played a pivotal role in organising the Expo Booth and leading the hands-on careers activity of "Earth Detectives" that got the students to interpret the wooden drillholes and come up with their own interpretations of what the cross-section of the wooden model would look like - before finally opening up and revealing the "real" cross-section. Your expertise and enthusiasm provided the secondary students with invaluable, real-world insights into the Resources industry, making the event both engaging and educational. Special thanks to Jordan Seah for his keynote speech on engaging the students with short videos on the insights into the day to day tasks in the mining industry. Rio Tinto's contribution has made a significant impact, and we are immensely grateful for your partnership. Here’s to continued collaboration and inspiring the next generation of resources professionals together! Thank you once again, Rio Tinto! 🙌 #GetIntoResources #RioTinto #DiamondSponsor #FutureTalent #CareerInspiration #NorthMetropolitanTAFE Jordan Seah, Mehak Satnani, Anthea Simmons, Dhan Prabhu, Amir Cooper, Aish Khanna, Jade Palmer, Harrison Button, Jonathon Clark, Annjanette Engelbrecht, Anthony Dekuyer, Tonya Reineks, Jade Singleton, Alex Bozward, Lauren Harding, Michelle Hoad

    A Graduate Mechatronic Engineer

Last month, I was pushed far beyond my comfort zone... I'm used to sitting in a recording booth with unlimited attempts when speaking, but this time I had to complete a single 10-minute take with no breaks! I had the incredible honour of serving as the Keynote Speaker on Day 3 for Get Into Resources Inc., where I had the privilege of inspiring over 200 secondary school students by sharing my short but diverse experience in Rio Tinto's graduate program. My objective was to encourage the youth to pursue a career in mining through testimony of the amazing experiences I've had so far. I truly believe that the mining industry can enable people to live exciting and wonderful lives. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, from the organisers (Dhan Prabhu, Jade Singleton, Holly Allday ACSM , Alex Bozward, Amy Lowe) to the Rio Tinto staff that presented Earth Science activity & organised Rio Tinto booth for engaging with students (Anthea Simmons, Kylie Walling, Analissa Yang, Aish Khanna, Jade Palmer, Harrison Button, Jonathon Clark, Amir Cooper) to event volunteers to the teachers who accompanied their students. A special thanks to Paul Goldie for providing the video footage and audio 🙌 Thank you for this opportunity to speak and I hope we continue to make a positive impact on the next generation! 🪨⛏️

Manager Operational Performance Insights at BHP

What an incredible day! Yesterday, I had the privilege of escorting Year 10 students through various sessions led by professionals from the resources industry at the Get Into Resources Inc. event. Sadly, none of the students in my group expressed interest in pursuing a career in the resources industry when asked at the start of the event. I anticipated a challenging day ahead, hoping to convince at least a few of them of the industry's immense opportunities. However, as the event progressed, it became clear that the GIR event and the dedicated industry professionals were the true influencers! The sessions were informative, engaging, and fun. The presenters were so compelling that I even considered returning to a FIFO role or exploring a new profession myself! By the end of the day, the students' perspectives had significantly shifted, with many now considering careers in the resources sector—a tremendous win for our industry. While it's tempting to think our work is done, this event highlighted to me that the younger generation still lacks adequate knowledge about our remarkable industry. Ensuring that teachers, coordinators, and students are well-informed about the diverse opportunities available in the resources sector is crucial for attracting smart and passionate recruits in the future. As Jade Singleton aptly stated in her opening speech, "If you can’t grow it, you have to mine it." There will always be a demand for what we provide. We must intensify our efforts to reach the next generation and their mentors to guarantee our industry's growth and sustained success. If anyone has any more opportunities for myself and others to lean into sharing our industry with others, please reach out! Thank you to everyone who coordinated the GIR event, it was truely an awesome experience!
