Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations attract people from across Australia and around the world. A standout feature of these celebrations in 2024 is the City of Sydney's commitment to accessibility, ensuring people with disability can fully enjoy the event with 6 accessible viewing spots available. We always say that information is a key step to becoming accessible and inclusive, and the City of Sydney has showcased this in action with resources available on the website including an accessibility map, site entry details, public transport advice, alternative celebration options, accommodation suggestions, and the locations of accessible pick-up and drop-off zones. Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations set a benchmark for accessibility and inclusivity. They demonstrate how events can cater to the needs of people with disability, enhancing not only the tourism industry but any event held across Australia. Providing comprehensive accessibility information ensures everyone can participate and enjoy their experiences fully. This year marked another step forward in creating a more accessible and inclusive tourism landscape! Here are three standout moments: 1. Queensland extended its Year of Accessible Tourism, offering grants and support to help organisations enhance their access and inclusion efforts. Initiatives like GetAboutAble’s training programs and DAIP development support made a tangible impact on operators. Dive into our blog ‘Understanding accessibility opportunities for tourism and event operators’ to learn more, linked below. 2. The conversation around accessible air travel gained momentum, fuelled by lived experiences and the inclusion of accessibility in the Australian Aviation White Paper. The December Symposium on Accessibility in International Civil Aviation further addressed barriers to air travel for people with disabilities, marking a significant step toward protecting their rights. 3. The Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Conference entered its 4th year, hosted in Melbourne/Naarm on August 27. We heard from keynote speakers, industry leaders and tourism operators on a diverse range of themes such as co-designing accessible and inclusive experiences, accessible tourism insights, inclusive marketing and employment. As we reflect on 2024, these achievements remind us of the importance and potential of inclusive tourism. Let’s keep driving change together in 2025! What was your standout moment from 2024? Leave a comment and let us know. Destination marketing is what drives travellers to your destination. While there are some widely known campaigns from Australian tourism destinations, how often do you see disability representation in those campaigns? Or, accessibility features showcased? Incorporating accessibility and showcasing diverse talent in your marketing not only ensures inclusivity but also opens your destination to the $13 billion disability market in Australia, attracting more diverse travellers and increasing tourism revenue. Get a taste of our work with the award winning "Canberra: More Than Inclusive, More Than Accessible" campaign, developed with VisitCanberra and Threesides Marketing. Developing an inclusive marketing campaign in 2025 can support your goals in improving access and inclusion for all who travel. Reach out to us at consulting@getaboutable.com to get started. Brilliant to be involved with Graeme Innes AM and Tegan Taylor on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s Radio Life Matters interrogating the state of #airports and #airline travel for people with #disability on #IDPWD yesterday. Listen to the #podcast that investigated "Flying can be a stressful time for even expert travellers, but the stakes are considerably higher for people with #disability. With millions of Australians expected to take to the skies over the summer period, experts say people with disability can face nightmarish experiences if airlines don't take their duty of care seriously. Experiences include loss of #dignity, #damage to wheelchairs and even #physicalinjury. So, do these experiences deter people with disability from flying? And what more should airlines be doing to ensure people with disability can #travel safely?"
