Measuring and managing progress towards ocean sustainable development
About us
GOAP is a global, multi-institutional partnership established to enable countries and other stakeholders to go Beyond GDP to effectively measure and manage progress towards ocean sustainable development. GOAP aims to support at least 30 countries by 2030 to build complete sequences of national ocean accounts and co-create knowledge products that support the development of globally accepted and standardised ocean accounting practices by 2023. Co-Chaired by UNESCAP and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, GOAP brings together governments, international organisations, and research institutions to build a global community of practice for ocean accounting.

🌊 🔑 Ocean accounts can help mobilise and direct finance to support a sustainable ocean economy and a nature positive future 🌊 As we navigate the many challenges of increasing climate change impacts and biodiversity loss in coastal and marine ecosystems, we need innovative solutions to drive finance ⏩ toward projects that deliver nature-positive outcomes. ❗ The urgent need to close the finance gap for #climate and #biodiversity was highlighted during #CBD16 and #COP29 this year. Next week, the Global Environment Facilities (GEF) will hold their 68th General Meeting (#68GEF) with a focus on enhancing and strengthening portfolio management and environmental achievements. In this month’s finance insight, expert Arlette Schramm from the GOAP Secretariat explores how #OceanAccounts could be the solution to unlocking must needed investment in the #SustainableBlueEconomy. Ocean accounts: 🔹 Assess nature-related risks and opportunities, enabling more accurate risk assessment and valuation. 🔹 Provide a foundation for developing multifaceted policy frameworks that position nature at the core of economic considerations. 🔹 Serve as a baseline for assessing the impacts of economic activities on critical ecosystem drivers, informing sustainable resource management. 🔹 Employ advanced research methodologies, including ocean robotics, remote sensing, big data analytics, and machine learning, to gather comprehensive data on marine ecosystems. 🔗 Read the Expert Insight now: https://lnkd.in/g_9w_g-2 #OceanAccounts #BeyondGDP #OceanFinance #SustainableFinance #BlueEconomy #NaturePositive

📈 Data and visualisation for ocean accounting in Belize 🏝️🌎 Last week, a workshop on “Ocean Accounts Data Pathways and Visualization Tools ” brought together over 25 participants from organizations around Belize to develop capacity for #OceanAccounting in the country. 💡 This is part of Belize’s two year plan to Advance Ocean Accounting for Sustainable Development in Belize. Last week the Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) Secretariat for this project, marking a pivotal step towards developing robust #OceanAcounts for the sustainable management of Belize’s marine resources. This initial project is funded by the UK Government. Over three days, participants at the workshop: 📈 Gained an understanding of data requirements for #OceanAccounting and assessing current data gaps. 📈 Reviewed data collection protocols in #Belize and mapped contributors and collaborators, involved in the ocean accounting process. 📈 Developed strategies to strengthen data-sharing mechanisms and define roles to ensure sustainable ocean accounting processes. Participants developed a comprehensive stakeholder map, which aligned the data needs for ocean accounting and highlighted critical gaps and opportunities. This progress is a vital step toward a data-driven, resilient ocean accounting framework that will guide Belize’s sustainable #BlueEconomy. Workshops such as this one will support the delivery of the project’s aims to: 🔷 Build capacity for #OceanAccounting in Belize; 🔷 Use ocean accounting to support #SustainableOceanEconomy development and informed decision-making; 🔷 Develop ocean ecosystem accounts for the Ambergris Caye Reef, which borders Belize’s largest island; and 🔷 Create a national Ocean Tourism Satellite Account to provide insights into the contributions of the tourism sector to the economic wellbeing of Belize. Organisations involved include the Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management (MBEDRM), Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change (MSDCC), Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining (MNRPM), Ministry of Economic Development (MED), the Fisheries Department, the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute (CZMAI), and the University of Belize (UB)’s Environmental Research Institute. Well done to speakers: Maria Granada Alarcon Blazquez and Mitchell Lyons from the GOAP Secretariat, CZMAI, Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) team and Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute (CZMAI).
