At the G20 Brazil Leaders’ Summit, ERIA reaffirmed its commitment to disaster resilience and sustainable development by co-hosting a high-level forum with Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Rio de Janeiro. Under the theme ‘Innovative Strategies for Disaster Resilience,’ experts from Asia, Africa, and Latin America explored dynamic governance, equitable financing, and community-based solutions to address escalating climate challenges. Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura and Dr Anbumozhi Venkatachalam from ERIA shared Asian perspectives on governance and justice, highlighting the importance of multilateralism and innovation in tackling global issues. The forum’s outcomes, reflected in the G20 Leaders’ Declaration (18–19 November 2024), emphasised social, economic, and environmental equity while championing dialogue and global collaboration. On October 28-29, the "ASEAN Conference for Combating Plastic Pollution #ACCPP2024: Action, Innovation, and Partnership to Phase Out Plastic Pollution" brought together 250+ stakeholders from across ASEAN. Hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Lao PDR, in partnership with ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, UNDP Lao PDR, and Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, the conference hosted several rich sessions, fostered strategic discussions and called for increased regional cooperation. In this context I had the privilege to present the Global Plastic Action Partnership and its achievements in #ASEAN, with our Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), Viet Nam National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), #Cambodia and #Philippines and welcoming #LaoPDR - the latest addition to the National Plastic Action Partnerships. Dr Alloysius Joko Purwanto, Energy Economist at ERIA, shared his expert insights on the future of critical minerals and the EV industry in Southeast Asia during the latest AIG Global Trade Series podcast episode. Key Highlights: - Indonesia, with the world’s largest nickel reserves, is determined to become a regional EV industry leader—building an ecosystem to produce batteries and other ready materials. Though lacking lithium, partnerships with China and Australia secure supply chains. - To stay competitive and sustainable, Dr Joko emphasizes the importance of higher production standards and the need to diversify investments beyond China to include countries like the EU and US, even if costs are higher. - On sustainability, Dr Joko highlights the importance of policies for recycling and reusing batteries and suggests ASEAN countries explore innovative mechanisms for battery waste and vehicle scrapping. - While governments incentivize EV ownership, he believes Southeast Asia must focus on sustainable transport systems, prioritizing longer-lasting vehicles over rapid sales growth to minimize waste. ✨ Where will we be in 5 years?
