A nuclear Christmas is not a phrase we were expecting to lead our 2024 season’s greetings but here we are, so wait for it. To all the saints commonly referred to as clients, colleagues and stakeholders but we think of as our friends we wish you all a Merry Christmas. Thanks to those Brisbane based who joined as at Malt last week we had a blast catching up on the year. Normally these messages get used to blast business success and growth but this year we noticed something else we’d like to use this brief moment of attention we have to call out, in the Spirit of Christmas. The nuclear debate erupted, and this isn’t about that, this is about humans. At the centre of this debate is the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and our Integrated System Plan. Many of us here at GPE are ex-AEMO and wanted to use this message to give you some insight on what that feels like. Now we do this conscious it could be seen as a way to get some Christmas cheer from AEMO next year, but we do it anyway because it’s the right thing to do. Having your work, your life, your efforts and your dedication forensically unpacked by the highest Offices and Outlets in the land makes for an interesting year. What we’d like everyone to notice is these are humans on the end of the phone, in the screen and on the tip of your fingers. These are humans that carry the most important job in the country. Keeping the critical infrastructure that underpins all critical infrastructure operating. That’s something you feel when working at AEMO and the ISP and everything else is a reflection of those humans striving to do their best. Like we all do. Christmas at Southbank is a reflection of how we dance our way through this energy transition. As we all clamber for Daniel's attention we should set the table in our minds first. AEMO’s down the front leading our crowd but our spirit should be one, and our words kind. A photo still speaks a thousand of those. That’s not to say we don’t debate. We still do that. We’re all fighting for our advice in the crowd and while we do we’ve all made mistakes and generally it’s not on purpose. We’re all striving to do our very best. And when the lights rely on your best, that’s a human that feels that. We debate. But we learn to be kind. We can be sorry. We move on to the next. And so we all find our best patch of grass to help stop this planet from boiling. That’s the best we all are striving for. And so this is Christmas. And as we all engage in 2025, let it be all year. JP Morgan and BlackRock movement on ESG? Fascinating exclusive insight from the mouths of their Chair CEOs 👉 where is the flow of capital now heading 👉thankyou Brendan Wallace. (skip reading the text 👉 Brendan’s expression is more powerful on understanding the state of play) Brendan also nails the rub of the climate problem. The solution is technical.
Two things about the current moment's ESG sentiment really struck me after attending the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Conference: 1. Larry Fink’s Shift on ESG Larry Fink from BlackRock spoke, and what stood out was the complete absence of any mention of ESG. A year ago, ESG dominated his messaging—it was everywhere. This time, when someone from the audience brought it up, he skirted the topic entirely. Absolutely a noticeable and deliberate shift in tone. 2. Jamie Dimon's Opposition to ESG Jamie Dimon from JP Morgan followed with an incredibly direct and unvarnished speech. He expressed strong antipathy toward ESG, equating it with "woke" policies and saying JP Morgan had gone too far in its embrace of it. His message was distinctly anti-ESG and unapologetically critical. This conference, which featured top CEOs and CIOs from major asset managers, left me thinking about how much momentum ESG has provided for climate, sustainability, and impact funds over the last four years—it’s been massive. But now, with some of the world’s largest capital allocators expressing disinterest at best and outright opposition at worst, I’m wondering what this means for the future. I’ve always felt ESG was an unnatural fit for climate funds, because it lumped together unrelated issues, like ethics and sociology, with the very technical challenge -- it's literally a physics problem -- of solving the energy transition. With this fracturing of ESG gaining traction, I’m curious: How will this shift affect private market capital flows into climate, and what does it mean for climate funds going forward?

Victoria Sets New Record for Low Coal and Gas Share Today, Mon 02 Dec 2024, Victoria achieved another milestone in its energy transition. At 13:25 hrs, the state recorded its Minimum Instantaneous Coal and Gas Share at just 21.9%, marking a 2.83% drop from the previous record of 24.7%, which was set on Tue 13 Feb 2024 at 13:25 hrs. It’s worth noting that the previous record on Tue 13 Feb 2024 was driven by exceptional circumstances. During a heatwave, severe storms brought down multiple transmission towers, causing major transmission lines to trip. This incident led to widespread power cuts, taking out Victoria’s biggest coal generator, Loy Yang A, along with some renewable plants. In contrast, today’s record reflects the steady growth of renewable energy and a deliberate shift away from traditional fossil fuel generation. This new low signals the increasing role of renewables in Victoria’s energy mix and the progress being made towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. As records like this continue to fall, they highlight not only the transformation of the energy system but also the challenges of managing a reliable and resilient grid during this transition. #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #Victoria #CoalExit #GridTransformation #Australia #NEM #GlobalPowerEnergy
