Connecting young Australians to the world.
About us
Founded in 2011, Global Voices is a non-profit organisation providing young Australians with personal and professional development opportunities in foreign policy, diplomacy, and international relations. We partner with organisations to deliver our Global Voices Scholarship Program, in which Australian youth participate in a high-level research fellowship and attend the world's most prestigious summits. Our Scholars have travelled to forums including the IMF & World Bank Annual Meetings, World Health Assembly, the annual OECD Forum, and the United Nations. Global Voices Scholars experience exclusive access and exposure to high-level foreign policy negotiations, as well as the opportunity to meet and network with Australian government representatives, senior academics, business leaders, and international decision makers. Many of the testimonials we receive from our Scholars highlight the transformative nature of a Global Voices Scholarship; an experience that alters their perceptions of their capacity to contribute to positive and sustainable global development and broadens their future career aspirations. A fantastic reflection on the COP29 delegation from one of our Policy Fellows, Lilia Ben Dekhil. A huge thank you to the people in the GV team who made this all happen, and some particular superstars from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water who elevated this experience with access to the lesser known elements of the conference; Jared Huntley, Laura Van den Honert, Alex Archibald-Binge and all of the negotiators who took the time to mentor our Fellows throughout the COP29. And of course, our 5 COP Fellows who approached the opportunity with excitement, curiosity, and a willingness to put in hours late into the night to understand the minutiae of UNFCCC negotiations, Eliza Chaney Roberto Vitali-Lawn Jack Willis Roman Davas-Fahey Lilia Ben Dekhil ✨
Global Voices COP29 Fellow | 2022 NCP Scholar 🇸🇬🇹🇭 | Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/ Bachelor of Environmental Science Student
It’s been just over a week since I returned from COP29 as a Global Voices Fellow, and I’m still processing the transformative and multifaceted experience it was. Stepping into the COP space, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. (For my pre-COP reflections, check out my thought piece: Phantom of the COPera.) What I’ve come away with is a deeper understanding of the complexities—and contradictions—of global climate negotiations. For those following COP from the outside, it’s easy to view it through a binary lens: success or failure. But as I witnessed firsthand, that dichotomy oversimplifies the complexities of a consensus-driven process like the UNFCCC. Progress can be painstakingly slow, and the outcomes often fall short of the ambition we desperately need. While it’s disheartening to see opportunities for bold action missed, dismissing COP altogether risks ceding the space to those who seek to obstruct progress, letting them define the narrative. A remark I overheard at COP struck a chord: "name and fame," rather than "name and shame." Walking through the delegation pavilions, I felt the palpable energy and dedication of participants—countries, delegates, and civil society groups who are deeply committed to advancing climate action. Many were there because they care deeply, because they have something vital to say, or because they want to learn and contribute. I proudly count myself among the latter group. As part of the Global Voices program, I had the privilege of shadowing a DCCEEW negotiator and closely following a negotiation stream. Witnessing the real-time dynamics of these discussions—whether it was debating a single word’s inclusion or unpacking its broader implications—was a masterclass in international diplomacy. Terms like ‘takes note of’ versus ‘welcomes’ may seem minor, but they carry immense weight in these texts. This experience gave me a newfound appreciation for the technical and human dimensions of climate negotiations. COP can be overwhelming, but I’m incredibly grateful for the Global Voices team (Kelsey M., Elly Hanrahan and Lucy Skelton) and my fellow delegates, who provided invaluable support and camaraderie throughout the experience. The bilateral meetings we had offered profound insights into both COP processes and broader climate governance—perspectives I’ll carry with me through the remainder of my Policy Fellowship and into my future career. It’s easy to be cynical about COP. But there are people in that space who care deeply and are working tirelessly to push the needle forward. That gives me hope—not naive hope, but the kind grounded in action, persistence, and the collective will to create change. 🌏🌱
