🏏 🏏 Australian cricket legend Mike Hussey is raising awareness about #haemochromatosis, a condition he was diagnosed with after his father tragically passed away from liver cancer aged 73. Undiagnosed iron overload was revealed as an underlying cause. Fortunately, Mike discovered he had haemochromatosis towards the end of his international cricket playing career. With no obvious symptoms, his levels did not affect his cricket. In fact, he thinks his team mates probably weren’t aware of it or that he was having venesections, which fairly quickly brought his levels down. 🩸🩸 Mike was pleased to learn he could have therapeutic venesections with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and encourages others to turn their treatment into life-saving support for others. He emphasizes the importance of early testing and monitoring, especially for those with a family history of the condition. Mike also urges Australians to register on the new Australian Haemochromatosis Registry and stay informed about managing this condition effectively. Interesting US study in JAMA Network Open. In the 2023 study, it is revealed that iron overload is often under-diagnosed in individuals with positive C282Y homozygosity. Findings suggest the potential benefit of population screening for HFE C282Y homozygosity. This groundbreaking initiative aims to enhance health outcomes for individuals with haemochromatosis, their families and the broader community by enabling critical research into the effects of iron overload on health and well-being.
