PD: Ticking all the Boxes? Our latest article for Intrepid ED News considers if "Ideally PD could both tick the certification boxes it needs to and also provide teachers with what they need as learners in a holistic way." We also show how you can use The Detective Toolⓒ from our book “21 Visual Thinking Tools for the Classroom: Developing Real-World Problem Solvers in Grades 5-10” to examine PD opportunities. https://lnkd.in/d2nu8zCV #PD #thinking #education

"How do we plan for an adventure, and can we really plan for the unexpected?" Exploring real world issues and experiences with students can make a world of a difference. This quote by Marios Mantzoukis and Fiona Mason, bikepackers and science teachers is from our book '21 Visual Thinking Tools for the Classroom: Developing Real-World Problem Solvers in Grades 5-10". They used our Go Earth Toolⓒ in the context of their cycling trip 4200 meters up in the Bolivian Andes through the lenses of curiosity, adventure, exploration and discovery. Exploration: "Successfully tackling the unexpected can only happen if you are self-aware. Knowing your limits, knowing your partner, knowing what you are looking for and what you are willing to risk to get there, all these are essential components when problem-solving in the wilderness. Honing additional skills, such as collaboration and creative and critical thinking, is also of critical importance." Check out the book and see how you can inspire your students! https://lnkd.in/ggcpmE8p #problemsolving #students #collaboration

It can be challenging for us to reflect on our personal biases. The Bias and Fairness Toolⓒ from our book '21 Visual Thinking Tools for the Classroom: Developing Real-World Problem Solvers in Grades 5-10' is a useful tool to help us get started. "The tool did get me thinking about my bias and whether I am being totally fair in my thinking and opinions. I agree that my bias does tend to make me more likely to be judgmental of anyone who does not passionately and vociferously voice their opinions and take a heated stand. The tool has been useful in that it actually made me consider my bias from a different perspective, something I have not always been inclined to do in the past" - student quote. Testing & Transfer Having participated at the 'UNESCO conference on the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development' in Bangkok earlier this year, we were invited to be "testers" for the draft of the Recommendation's Global Implementation Guide. We selected a range of educators from different countries to test the guide, including a Primary Academics Coordinator, Student Teacher, High School Teacher and Teacher Librarian. Our check list consisted of detailed criteria for structure, content and application. Additional questions included 'Are there challenges you might face implementing the recommendation in your local context that the document doesn’t address?'. Feedback was thoughtful and constructive, educators were inspired to think in different aways after this experience. Our feedback included the addition of gaming and e-sports to create awareness, as well as supporting informal learning experiences that promote sustainable practices (e.g. water consumption, energy saving and conservation) to support the transfer of learning from home to school and vice versa. How could you use the Transfer Tool© below in your curriculum? Our article on the conference Intrepid ED News https://lnkd.in/ev6TNCXy
