Just finished reading Meaning Loss: Reimagining DEI & Purpose by Sanje Ratnavale, a thought-provoking exploration of the tensions inherent in education today. I initially picked up this book while reflecting on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our school context, but it quickly became much more than that. As I read, I found myself deeply engaged in its analysis of curriculum design and institutional priorities—a shift that felt perfectly timed as we work to consolidate our beliefs about student learning at our school.
One quote that has stayed with me is, "The more embedded the importance of the school as a timeless institution with the associated professional metrics, the less risk tolerant it is on its own." This insight speaks directly to the challenge many schools face: balancing the pull of standards and what we think we know works with the willingness to take risks and explore what might work even better for our students.
Ratnavale’s work uses history to spark new insights, challenging me to continue to rethink how we approach learning and teaching. I highly recommend this book to educators, administrators, and anyone passionate about shaping the future of education.
