We're excited to share a new paper from Health Translation SAs Consumer and Community Involvement Action Group, setting best practices for acknowledging lived experience in research! Prompted by Elizabeth Lynch in 2021, a small working group was formed, and along with support from University of South Australia public health students, a survey was conducted with consumers, researchers, and journal editors to understand current practices and preferences. The study found a preference for the term “person with lived experience” and a call for researchers to consult contributors on their preferred acknowledgment terms. Special thanks to our collaborators—Elizabeth Lynch, Hannah Wardill, Agustina Gancia, Ph.D., Shyamsundar Muthuramalingam, Ph.D., Louise Townsin, Nadia Corsini, Sarah Eley, Lana Earle-Bandaralage, and Stacy Larcombe—who helped bring this work to life. It's another full house today at Health Translation SAs Annual Consumer and Community Involvement in Research event! A big thank you to National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) CEO Professor Steve Wesselingh for sharing his valuable insights into the critical role of consumer and community involvement (CCI) in driving impactful health and medical research across Australia. With CCI becoming increasingly essential, it’s encouraging to see how the NHMRC is embedding this priority into its strategic goals for the next three years. We’re also grateful to our other speakers who highlighted inspiring, real-world examples of how CCI is shaping research outcomes locally and globally.
