HILT CRC welcomes the announcement that our industry partners BlueScope and Rio Tinto, alongside BHP and Woodside Energy, have chosen Western Australia’s Kwinana Industrial Area as the site for Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace pilot plant.   Supported by a $75 million investment from the Government of Western Australia, the NeoSmelt collaboration aims to produce 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes of molten iron annually, marking a major milestone in decarbonising steel production.   Initially powered by natural gas, the facility will transition to hydrogen, paving the way for lower-emission steelmaking using Pilbara hematite iron ore without traditional blast furnaces. Feasibility studies begin next year, with operations expected by 2028. #NeoSmelt #GreenIron #GreenSteel #NetZero #Decarbonisation

It was great to see the innovative research with amazing potential application for decarbonising heavy industry presented this week at the University of Adelaide's Centre for Energy and Technology (CET) 2024 Research Day.   Founded by our Research Director Prof. Graham 'Gus' Nathan, CET covers some of HILT's core research capability - Dr Alfonso Chinnici, Dr Woei Saw and Dr Zhiwei Sun gave illuminating presentations on HILT projects and our CEO Jenny Selway chaired a panel discussion on net-zero industry.   Congratulations to all the poster winners, especially HILT-supported PhD students Renae O'Hara and Siyun Ning, who shared the award for Best Industrial Process Technology poster, and Yuecheng Lin, who received a commendation in the same category. 🎉 Celebrating Outstanding Projects and Technologies: Meet the ZESTY (Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY) project and Calix Limited CEO and Managing Director Phil Hodgson, Winner of the Mission Innovation Net-Zero Industries Award 2024 in the Outstanding Projects category. 🏆 The award recognises ZESTY’s innovative, low-cost solution for green iron and steel production—critical for decarbonising an industry responsible for ~8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The technology has been developed and proven at pilot scale in collaboration with industry partners and members of the HILT CRC, coupled with support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Australian Government. Tasmania is acting to both reduce its carbon emissions and increase its resilience to climate change. In October this year, HILT CRC made a submission to the Tasmanian Government’s consultation on its 'Industrial Processes and Product Use Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan 2024–2029', which has now been released. It was pleasing to see that the plan considers HILT’s work and refers to our project on 'Hydrogen supply within HILT regional hubs – H2 cost and synergistic opportunities' for its ‘Collaboration to investigate emissions reduction opportunities for emissions intensive industries’ case study. Most of the plan’s focus areas align closely with HILT CRC’s ongoing efforts to de-risk and accelerate the transition to low-carbon heavy industry, particularly support for: 🔧research, development and the adoption of existing and emerging decarbonisation technology 🔧the market for local lower emissions products 🔧the transition to a lower emissions economy 🔧driving action through partnerships and collaboration.
