What a turnout for our last of the #HunterInnovationFestival Roadshow sessions! It was such a pleasure to moderate a great panel discussion, super charged by a warm welcome from the new Muswellbrook Shire Council Mayor Cllr #JeffDrayton and a fantastic address from Senator the Hon #TimAyres, Assistant Minister for Manufacturing. We are in a unique but fortunate position as the economic powerhouse of the #Hunterregion and there is a concentrated focus on progressing and leveraging our infrastructure, resilience and innovativeness. Minister Ayers highlighted the rationale behind building industrial capability and National security and economic resilience: 1: Our position has slipped internationally in manufacturing self sufficiency 2: With our above and below ground resources, we are in a position to do well out of the Great Industrial Transformation. In Minister Ayers words “there is no country you would rather be”. 3: We need to ensure investment stays and grows within Regions as opposed to retreating to big cities. It was also interesting to hear of the tax credits available for manufacturing onshore - something I hope will be a major incentive to our future position. Huge thank you to our panelists Boris Novak, BE(ELEC) GAICD , Clare Larkin-Sykes , Rob Cooper and Brett Thomas Your experience, insights and willingness to help innovators, business owners and communities is energising. Three key takeaways from our chat included: Mindset - a confident one (we have done this before) and a curious one (take the blinkers off - what are the opportunities?) Time - we have time but we need to use it! On the other side of the coin, it will take time to get where we want to go Support - there are people, agencies and organisations here to help. Reach out, ask questions, get connected. And of course thanks to the amazing team that helped this all happen! NewH2 is delighted that last week, the NSW Government has granted planning approval for a significant local renewable energy initiative: a $207.6 million hydrogen hub in the Hunter region. At our recent Knowledge Exchange we, were privileged to be provided an update from Origin Energy Future Fuels, leading the State Significant Development project on Kooragang Island, with construction set to commence in mid-2025. Initially, the hub will provide around 55 megawatts of electrolyser capacity by 2026, with plans to expand to over 1 gigawatt within the next decade. This hub will produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, offering a versatile solution for both industrial applications and transportation fuel. By establishing a commercial-scale green hydrogen supply chain and a refuelling network in the Hunter Region and NSW, the development will be a major milestone in establishing a local hydrogen economy as well, estimated to generate around 170 jobs for local industry. The majority of the hydrogen will be directed towards carbon abatement at Orica's nearby ammonium nitrate manufacturing facility. Additionally, it will be accessible to transport customers through onsite and satellite refuelling stations. This initiative is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 52,000 tonnes annually from Orica’s facility alone.
