We thank the Paihau-Robinson Research Institute and Tane Butler for the incredible opportunity to host the Hitachi TM4000 benchtop SEM at Maungaraki School, Lower Hutt, for a few weeks. A special credits to James Baty PhD for his time and contagious enthusiasm in presenting the fascinating work on honey bees from the Phil Lester Lab at the Victoria University of Wellington. James explained the effects of Varroa parasite infection on honey bees and how his research aims to mitigate its impact. The students and teachers were amazed by the level of detail captured by the SEM in the parasite and honey bee anatomy. The Paihau-Robinson Research Institute's Hitachi TM4000 SEM is a fantastic resource to inspire and encourage STEM education in schools across Aotearoa New Zealand.
