Six Lockhart Shire businesses have been recognised for their commitment to reducing landfill at the local site through their support of a project called Circular Organics in The Eastern Riverina. This project is being delivered by REROC Projects as a funded initiative of the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) under the NSW Government's Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy and is funded from the waste levy. The initiative, called Bin Trim, encourages food-related businesses to divert their organic food waste from general garbage waste to green FOGO bins for collection by Council for delivery to green waste deposits at the local site's. The addition of organic waste to the green waste results in a better-quality compost that can be used by Council on public lands such as sporting fields, public gardens and more. Mayor of Lockhart Shire Cr Peter Sharp presented the framed certificates to representatives from Elecnor Australia-Lockhart work camp; LockhartDeFortuneRestaurant, LockhartIGASupermarket, Emily Gardens, The Rock; CrystalsRestaurantAtTheRock - at a morning tea held in the Shire Chambers in Lockhart on Wednesday 18th December. Mayor Peter Sharp said, he was very pleased that Lockhart Shire was able to support this project as it is delivering positive outcomes for the ever- challenging waste management issues faced by the Council and many other Councils throughout the State. "I congratulate the managers of the six local businesses and thank them for their participation". All together these 6 businesses have saved 75 cubic meters of food organics from being placed in landfill. We encourage any other businesses with an organic food waste stream to become involved in REROC's project. Businesses who wish to be involved are to contact Council for further information. Council's General Manager Gavin Rhodes and new CEO of REROC, Megan Mulrooney were also in attendance. Lockhart Shire Council was proud to welcome Megan as it was her first official event.

ADVOCACY IN ACTION! YOU TOLD US AND WE ACTED Today we launched our housing campaign to address the housing challenges in our region. Businesses have told us through our Business Conditions survey that housing availability and housing affordability are the top two barriers they face in attracting staff and this is also prohibiting their growth. Our businesses, our local economy and our community deserve more. Our region has been told that these are the 'Golden Years' and with a pipeline of major infrastructure projects and investment heading our way, we need solutions now. This will be the difference between our community realising the investment opportunities and not. We have worked with members, Regional Leaders, local government and planning professionals to come up with a proactive and solutions based campaign. We are asking the government to collaborate with us and work with us to solve our local issues. We are asking for certainty in our planning system, one with enforceable timeframes, we are asking for resources to provide local government the support they need to cater for growth, we are asking to look at alternative delivery and invest in building capability and capacity in prefabricated housing that can not only solve supply issues, but also centralise our workforce. We are asking for accommodation for our temporary workforce to leave a legacy, accommodation that can be repurposed for social and affordable housing, aged care or tourism accommodation. You can find out more about our campaign asks here: https://lnkd.in/g6EAridR We are proud to representing our local members on local issues. Know that we are always advocating for it to be easier and better for you to do business. Not a member? Help support the work we do here: https://lnkd.in/gdrwh7dr Business NSW Housing Now! The 2023 Best Small Town Festival or Event Silver Award* goes to… Spirit of the Land Lockhart. Held in the Visit Riverina NSW town of Lockhart on the second weekend of October, Spirit of the Land Lockhart is an annual Festival and the flagship event of the Lockhart Shire. Underpinning this Visit Lockhart Shire festival is the National Farm Art Awards. The amazing sculptures in this unique competition are created from recycled metal, farm materials and elements of the land. Kick-started during the worst drought in Lockhart’s recorded history as a celebration to the resilience of those who live and work on the land, the festival has proved an outstanding success in reviving community spirit, inspiring enthusiasm and putting a small town well and truly on the Festival map. Congratulations to Lockhart Shire Council and everyone who contributes to this mighty celebration in a little town, and also to Andy Gill for winning this year’s major Spirit of the Land Award. * Entry into this special discretionary category was based on ABS 2021 population statistics. #seeaustralia #arttourism #tourismawards Destination NSW
