We are thrilled to announce that two academics from the Faculty of Science and Engineering have been named as the best Australian researchers in their fields according to The Australian’s annual Research 2025 magazine. Associate Professor Jia Wu from the School of Computing has been named the Australian leader in Databases and Information Systems and Professor Culum Brown has been named the Australian leader in Animal Behaviour and Ethology. Additionally, Macquarie University was ranked as Australia’s top-performing research institution in Computational Linguistics and Animal Behaviour and Ethology. “Congratulations to our academics for this well-deserved recognition of their outstanding achievements in their fields. This reinforces our reputation for research excellence and the incredible work our researchers do to make real-world impact,” says Professor Lucy Marshall, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. “I am continuously impressed by the work out of our faculty and wider university. It is brilliant to see this reflected in this competitive assessment of research quality.”

Flashback to Macquarie University Engineering's Women in Engineering Leadership Forum last month where prominent women engineering leaders from Transport for NSW Downer Transport & Infrastructure Arcadis RTS and more, shared their journeys and insights with the next generation. The event was all about inspiring change and breaking barriers, tackling crucial topics including the "merit myth", sustainability challenges, and supporting early career engineers. It also launched our new Women in Engineering Mentoring Program, launching in 2025 to connect our students with industry professionals. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d_ATNBV3

Grant success. Congratulations Dr Foad Taghizadeh and Dr Sara Deilami
Two Macquarie University academics have been awarded funding under the Electrification & Energy Systems Network (EESN) Seed Grant round, which supports projects focused on reducing carbon emissions through electrification. “Winning this grant is a fantastic milestone for our team. The funding will help us refine our prototype, achieve certification, and bring our vision to life. It is a pivotal step toward delivering a solution that empowers homeowners to maximise their renewable energy usage while contributing to a more sustainable future,” says Dr Foad Taghizadeh. Dr Foad Taghizadeh’s project with industry partner, Smartizer, involves developing an AI-driven energy management platform with a modular, plug-and-play battery system that integrates with EV chargers and solar inverters. Dr Deilami says, “This funding will support the development of innovative solutions to address challenges in electric infrastructure.” Dr Deilami’s project with industry partner, Stryder, involves using an artificial intelligence algorithm to optimise the efficiency of electric shuttle (e-shuttle) bus routes and battery capacity, to create a more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable transportation system. #MacquarieUniversity

Did you know that a blood protein could help identify kids at risk of long-term concussion effects? Scientists at APAF - Macquarie University's Australian Proteame Analysis Facility - helped discover that children with prolonged concussion symptoms have lower levels of a protein called Alpha-1-ACT. Using advanced mass spectrometry, APAF's team analysed blood samples from kids who experienced sports-related concussions. As one of Australia's leading biological mass spectrometry facilities for over two decades, APAF's state-of-the-art equipment and expert team help researchers tackle complex challenges across medicine, food production and beyond. https://lnkd.in/g64-svtQ

Macquarie University Faculty of Science and Engineering reposted this
Earlier this week, Macquarie University celebrated a significant milestone in the development of the Engineering and Australian Astronomical Optics building with a traditional Topping Out Ceremony. The completion of the final concrete pour marks the end of the building’s major structural phase, and we are now moving into the fit-out and façade stages, with completion scheduled for mid-2025. The ceremony featured a smoking ceremony by Dharug elder Uncle Christopher Tobin and included speeches from university leadership and the project team. This state-of-the-art facility will play a key role in supporting Macquarie’s new project-based engineering curriculum.

Yesterday, we held a traditional 'Topping Out Ceremony' with our project team including Johnstaff and FDC Construction & Fitout to celebrate a major construction milestone for Macquarie University's new Engineering and Australian Astronomical Optics building. Moving from the structural phase to the fit-out phase is also an exciting milestone in our journey to enact a new project-based engineering curriculum. https://lnkd.in/g-wkuYB2

Q-Day - when quantum computers could break most modern encryption - is likely to arrive in the next decade, and it's a real challenge that needs real solutions. Macquarie University's expanded partnership with @BTQ Technologies to develop quantum-safe security solutions, led by Professor Gavin Brennen from the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, will also train the next generation of Australian quantum researchers through CSIRO-funded PhDs and micro-grants. https://lnkd.in/gffpY4xv
