About us
The Centre's footprint encompasses the Mildura Rural City Council and Swan Hill City Council areas and has staffed offices in Mildura. The Centre plans to drive research and innovation through collaboration across these regions, focusing on the horticulture, environment, energy and water sectors. The Mallee Regional Innovation Centre (MRIC) is a joint partnership between the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University, to combine the world-leading research capabilities of both institutions via an Academic Panel. The Mallee-based SuniTAFE is also a partner of MRIC and will deliver training to address emerging skill requirements in the horticulture sector. The Centre will prioritise research projects that address key challenges for the regions, pairing in-depth knowledge of the local area and leveraging local leadership and expertise through the Strategic Advisory Panel. We are very excited about the major redevelopment that our partner SuniTAFE is undertaking at its SMART Farm Campus. The $3.9 million redevelopment, which includes new infrastructure, crops, courses and specialist teachers, will elevate the farm to a place of excellence, showcasing the latest agricultural advancements as well as providing first-class education and training. It is also expected to strengthen our partnership with SuniTAFE in promoting leading technology and the need for further digital literacy within an ever changing horticulture industry. Meet our new La Trobe University board member Professor Chris Pakes. Since joining the board this year, following the retirement of Professor Susan Dodds, Chris has seen the important role the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre can play in supporting industry and local communities in the region. “As a MRIC board member, I work with regional campus leadership to maintain strong relationships with local industry and communities, to provide regional co-location opportunities for industry, and access to La Trobe’s multi-campus research and innovation ecosystem,” Chris said.
