MATES in Mining is an arm of MATES in Construction - an industry-led, suicide prevention charity.
About us
MATES in Mining is an initiative of the Australian Mining Industry (unions and employer supported) based on the successful MATES in Construction program, aimed at reducing high rates of suicide and improving resilience and better mental health. MATES is an industry-led, research-backed charity, that's building a volunteer network of eyes and ears on the ground, trained to recognise the signs a workmate might be struggling with life and connect them to help. We lose a worker to suicide every second day. We also know our workers are 6 x times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. In the last 12 months 30% our apprentices have thought about suicide. A suicide is said to impact at least 135 people (conservatively). In 2021, MATES was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an example of global suicide prevention best practice. Our 24/7 National helpline is: 1300 642 111 MATES Branches: Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia

MATES in Mining reposted this
The only thing better than a small country town pie is the people you meet along the way. Sean Brady and I recently took a road trip out to Marvel Loch and had the pleasure of training more than 130 people at Barto Gold in the MATES in Mining suicide prevention program to help make the site a safer and more supportive workplace for all. Thank you to the HSE Management team that worked so hard in getting all the crews out to one of the General Awareness sessions, also to the 9 x Connectors and 5 x ASIST volunteers onsite. You are all legends who have put your hand up to be there for a mate who may be struggling and to build a more self-sufficient resilient workplace; with the MATES Team always in your corner either supporting you directly or helping you help others 24/7 with our 1300642111 helpline, onsite Field Officers and Case Management service. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the new year… and also for more road trip meat pies 🥧 💪 #matesstrongertogether #mateshelpingmates

This month is #SafeWorkMonth! A time to makes plans and have a chat about making safety a priority. This year’s theme is: Safety is everyone’s business. This awareness month provides an opportunity to shine a light on the challenges faced by workers across our industries. Earlier in the year we collaborated with the Australian Institute of Family Studies on the ‘Ten to Men’ study. This collaboration has allowed MATES to gain a deeper understanding on how we best approach mental health in some of the toughest industries. You can read more about the research here: https://lnkd.in/gVwu4qma #MATESinMining #NationalSafeWorkMonth #SuicidePrevention #TentoMen #Mentalhealth
